I forgot about how good Red C is. I put “Pressure’s On” on a #ShotgunSeamstress mixtape a very long time ago. Toni Young played bass in Red C. Dag Nasty “Dag with Shawn” (Dischord, 2011)

This is the original lineup of Dag Nasty featuring Shawn Brown of Swiz on vocals. It was recorded in 1985 but never officially released until 2011. Around this same time, Dischord also put out previously unreleased recordings by Void and Artificial Peace. I feel like vinyl reissue madness was hitting its peak at this time and hasn’t slowed down since.

Brown’s lyrics are both introspective and confrontational, and the music is a triumphant, melodic style of hardcore that creates a bridge to what ppl call emo today.

I grew up in the DC area but didn’t move to the city until around 1999, so I most definitely missed the glory days of DC #hardcore. Looking back at books like Banned In DC, I was always confused about why I was always the only black kid at shows (or maybe one of two) when it seemed like the DC scene of the 80s was pretty diverse. Since everyone already knows about Bad Brains, I focused on lesser known #BlackPunks from DC like Shawn Brown (Dag Nasty, Swiz) and Bubba Dupree (Void).
