Pictured is the Lower Cambrian Bristolia insolens—distinguished by the genal spines that emerge from its head. While specimens with disarticulated head shields are relatively common finds throughout the Western United States, complete examples are rare.

Fossil dating back 410 million years joins museum collection.
A 410-million-year-old fossil of a giant prehistoric organism which once loomed over north-east Scotland has been added to the collections of National Museums Scotland (NMS).
The example of Prototaxites was discovered in a sedimentary deposit near the village of Rhynie in Aberdeenshire.

Fossils of sea lilies can be found in rivers in England, and they were once believed to be fairy coins. They are also called "star stones" and are said to bring victory over enemies.

We had a great first fossil sorting session of 2026! Some really incredibly preserved teeth and fish bits this time.
If you're sad that you missed your chance, no worries! We have three more sessions before the summer:
Sunday, Feb.8
Sunday, Feb. 22
Sunday, March 8
Everyone is welcome! If you're in the Calgary area, why not give it a try?

🛢️ Què fer davant 'petrooligarques' i egos poderosos?
Nosaltres ho tenim clar:
🔋 Més #mobilitat elèctrica, per erradicar la dependència del #petroli i altres combustibles fòssils
🤝 Més cooperació i convivència, com ens recorda la #UCTAIB:

Prehistoric Sea Monster Didn't Stick to The Oceans, Suggests Fossil Study.
#Mosasaurs were the apex predators of the oceans during the reign of the dinosaurs, but new research reveals dinosaurs weren't safe from them in rivers either.
Researchers from Sweden, the US, and the Netherlands analyzed isotopes in several mosasaur teeth from sites across North Dakota, confirming that these ancient sea monsters could also live in freshwater environments.

This 70-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Egg Contained a Sparkling Crystal Surprise.
A grapefruit-sized dinosaur egg from a fossil bed in China gave paleontologists a huge surprise. Rather than a dinosaur embryo or sediment, it was filled with sparkling crystals of calcite lining the inner shell – a natural dinosaur geode

A 233-Million-Year-Old Fossil Reveals How #Pterosaurs Learned to Fly.
Learn how early reptiles began building the visual and brain skills needed for flight long before takeoff.
#Fossils of Ixalerpeton offered the clearest window yet into the earliest stages of pterosaur brain evolution. Although this small reptile never flew, its brain shows that some of the sensory groundwork for flight was already forming before wings ever appeared.

The newly discovered bonebed contained more than 800 vertebrate fossils, belonging to at least 17 species, including dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles and turtles

This #FossilFriday, meet Dunkleosteus, which lived ~360 million years ago. Scientists think it was one of the first large jawed vertebrates in the ocean & was an aggressive predator. The bones in its jaws served as cutters, rubbing against each other like self-sharpening shears

I wish I had clouds like these for my photos more often! This is the southern end of the Marble Mountains in California's Mojave Desert. The Marble Mountains are famous for the Latham Shale Formation which contains one of the earliest trilobite species at ~540 million years old! After about 15mins of splitting shale, I found this Olenellus clarki(?) cephalon. Finding fossils is kind of like time traveling. 🤩
