A 233-Million-Year-Old Fossil Reveals How #Pterosaurs Learned to Fly.
Learn how early reptiles began building the visual and brain skills needed for flight long before takeoff.
#Fossils of Ixalerpeton offered the clearest window yet into the earliest stages of pterosaur brain evolution. Although this small reptile never flew, its brain shows that some of the sensory groundwork for flight was already forming before wings ever appeared.

Enormous hoard of black #dinosaur bones discovered in #Transylvania. That's not all that was found.
The newly discovered bonebed contained more than 800 vertebrate fossils, belonging to at least 17 species, including dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodiles and turtles

This #FossilFriday, meet Dunkleosteus, which lived ~360 million years ago. Scientists think it was one of the first large jawed vertebrates in the ocean & was an aggressive predator. The bones in its jaws served as cutters, rubbing against each other like self-sharpening shears

I wish I had clouds like these for my photos more often! This is the southern end of the Marble Mountains in California's Mojave Desert. The Marble Mountains are famous for the Latham Shale Formation which contains one of the earliest trilobite species at ~540 million years old! After about 15mins of splitting shale, I found this Olenellus clarki(?) cephalon. Finding fossils is kind of like time traveling. 🤩

Meeting Lucy: How a World-First European Exhibition Brought Visitors Face to Face With the Fossil That ‘Shrinks Time’.
Two Australopithecus #fossils named Lucy and Selam made a rare trip out of Ethiopia for a 60-day display at the National Museum in Prague

New #pterosaur species discovered in previously overlooked specimen of dinosaur regurgitalite.
The discovery also offers a glimpse into ancient food chains in the region. The regurgitalite is fairly clear evidence of pterosaurs serving as prey to larger dinosaurs.

Lichens and drones reveal dinosaur bones.
Vibrant orange-colored lichens are helping scientists discover dinosaur fossils in Canada, according to a study published in Current Biology.

"certain lichen species preferentially colonize exposed dinosaur bones, creating distinctive spectral signatures that can be detected from 30 m above ground using drones... This likely occurs because the bones provide the alkaline, calcareous, and porous substrates the lichens favor... This pattern has been noted for decades, but never quantified until now"
