19 EU countries propose monitoring communications in the EU, but what would that mean for privacy?

Led by Denmark, several EU countries propose monitoring online communication such as private emails and social media messages to combat child abuse.

The so-called “Chat Control” proposal lacks majority support in the EU and faces strong criticism from some EU member states.

Curious to hear people's opinion about Delta Chat...

Especially with an eye on the possibility of mandatory 'client-side scanning' for messaging platforms like Signal and WhatsApp (i.e. turning these messaging apps into a direct eavesdropping device for the police), I'm wondering if Delta Chat might be a good alternative.

Delta Chat is based on email but it functions like an ordinary messaging app. It's PGP end-to-end encrypted, decentralised/federated, open source... so it should be possible for many people to run their own messaging servers, thereby circumventing (possibly, hopefully) the legal requirements of the chat control bill.
