Top Democrat on Oversight Committee Demands Trump Administration Account for Wildland Firefighter Vacancies

In June, the Forest Service told the public that it reached 99% of its hiring goal for its wildland firefighting workforce. But as of July 17, around 27% of jobs were still vacant, according to data obtained by ProPublica.

Here's the most recent imagery from @zoom_earth. The smoke line that leaves Marseille towards the south-east comes from the fire that started this morning at the north of the city, at the north of it. As the Mistral wind blows from north-west to south-east, the fire progresses towards the city very quickly, and the smoke has been passing over us for the last hours.

A screencast from Windy for the last 6 hours. We can see both Marseille & Narbonne fire panaches spreading over the sea on this one. Which means that the Tramontane must have started to blow in Narbonne. Not a good news. (Or it changed direction?)

Nearly a media Blackout of the Other Major California Fire

The lithium battery fire at the Vistra power plant in Moss Landing, Monterey County, California may be the largest ever battery fire anywhere in the world. Lithium fires burn at 2000 F and cannot be easily put out. Lithium does not burn through combustion, as carbon-containing fuels do. Trying to douse them with water only exacerbates the fire and can lead to explosions. And the lithium salts in the batteries are self-oxidizing, which makes them prone to reignite. Lithium fires can produce a variety of toxic gasses, such as Hydrofluoric acid, Hydrogen cyanide, Hydrogen chloride, and Sulfur dioxide.

Residents living as far as 20 miles away have been experiencing metallic tastes in their mouths, burning eyes, burning throats, and yellow residues all over their things. The fire’s been going for six days and only now has Governor Newsom decided to launch an investigation. This was the fourth fire at the site since 2019.
