@Curator I love the confidence and style of this subject. 😎

I decided to challenge myself a bit on this one. I get impatient and will cut/paste/morph my drawings to fix placement problems but today I made myself just erase and redraw as many times as needed. It wasn't as frustrating as I thought it might be.

Digital "pencil" sketch done on my phone using only pencil, eraser and blend tools. 🎉

A vertical shot of a sweeping mountainous vista. Long golden grass blurred in the foreground leads the eye to a lush grassy field curving along a natural ravine, where two people stand on the edge, silhouetted against low cloud that drifts down into the valley. The mountain ascends behind them, rock and grass, up to jagged rocky peaks against a cloudy grey sky.

An Indian man in loose white clothing and shades sitting on a floor strewn with orange petals. There's an explosion of yellow pigment powder around him, staining his shirt bright yellow and his trousers a paler pastel. There's an ornate golden sculpture behind him, and strings of yellow decoration hanging down from above.

A classic old red British telephone box on a paved street, a red stone-brick wallbehind it with a black wrought iron gate in the wall next to a hedgerow, a variety of trees and bushes behind the wall, and the edge of a house with a tall chimney just visible against a pale blue sky.

Your art history post for today: by Jules Bastien-Lepage (French, 1848-1884), Portrait de Sarah Bernhardt, 1879, oil on canvas, 17 1/8 x 13 5/8 in. (43.5 x 34.6 cm.), photo: Christie’s New York, 20 Oct 2022. #arthistory #portrait #portraitpainting #painting #oilpainting

Excerpt from the Lot Essay: “… in profile to focus on her form - clad in figure-hugging silk brocades, offset by an extravagant chiffon bow at the neck. Surface, thus exposed, contained soul. The eye ranges freely over the narrow seventeen-inch waist, the ramrod line of her back, the measurement between ear, nose and mouth, carefully calibrated, and the shock of unruly tresses tamed, it was said, by no more than two pins. By its very nature, a profile is more intimate than a full face; we observe without being observed. The mask is not in place and the eyes do not distract. In this instance, they cast their gaze upon a sculpture as a connoisseur might, and the piece Mlle Bernhardt delicately fingers is that of Orpheus, given to her to hold at this moment by Bastien-Lepage, in order to compliment and express her aspirations as a sculptor.”
