Drew Struzan RIP. He gave Floating Heads a level of artistry and emotion rarely seen in the unforgiving arena of motion picture poster illustration - I won't go into the very long list of his credits, but if you like movies, you've seen (and will instantly recognize) his work. #Art #DrewStruzan #Illustration #Movies #OldMovies #RIP

#RIP Patricia Routledge - Keeping Up Appearances
A great totara has fallen in the forest of our world.
I heard Dr. Jane Goodall speaking in person about a decade ago, and found it deeply inspiring. Today, with no context or preamble, my Mum showed me Dr. Jane Goodall’s parting message to humanity;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfLKHY52ERc
So Dr Goodall became the first person whose death I learned about from their own digital avatar. Her final message rekindled that same spark of compassionate determination that I took home from her talk.
#TIL that Shannen Doherty died last year;
"She first shared in August 2015 that he had been diagnosed with breast cancer a few months earlier. At that time, she'd filed a lawsuit against her former business managers, whom she said 'habitually blundered' tasks that included making her insurance payments, causing her coverage to lapse and resulting in a late diagnosis, after the cancer had spread."

🤦♂️ This should *not* be a thing.
What a wonderful woman. A gift to the world. Her legacy cannot be overstated.
On Jimmy Fallon’s show, she said:
“There’s so much wrong with the world today, and there’s so much need for a message of hope. Because if we all lose hope, then we may as well give up.”
RIP, Jane Goodall.

Jane Goodall was one of perhaps a handful of people I've ever heard speak, like the Dalai Lama, who you just feel their presence and aura as someone truly special.
Truly was glad I got to be around her in person, once - something I won't ever forget. 🙏.
“People get used to anything. The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free, you have to be acutely aware of being a slave.”
― Assata Shakur, Assata: An Autobiography
RIP Claudia Cardinale

I've reached an age where friends start dying off one by one, until I become one of them.
I've lost at least 5 friends around my age in the last 5 years, 1 a year. Good people who deserved to live to 100 or longer. More than half didn't even make it to 50. One just last week.
#RIP Gull.

Pearl Jam's Wreckage seems strangely appropriate in these heartbreaking times;
"Oh, visited by thoughts and not just in the night
That I no longer give a fuck who is wrong and who's right
This game of winner takes all, and all means nothing left
Spoils go the victor, and the other left for dead
Uh-huh, combing through the wreckage
Holding out, holding on
Combing through the wreckage"
Here they are playing it live in Las Vegas;
Another perennial favourite that seems appropriate, Hope by Fat Freddy's Drop;
"Hope for a generation,
Just beyond my reach,
Not beyond my sight."

(EDIT: swapped out link to version of Hope I prefer)
#RIP to the Freddies' legendary rhythm section, DJ Mu (Chris Faiumu). Released an anniversary edition of Hope would be a fitting tribute to Mu's legacy. I'd pay for it. Funds raised could go to his whānau or another worthy cause.
I do appreciate the fact that many people are thrilled and excited to talk about the movie Hackers like they are. But when asked about it, they are typically shocked that I hated the film.
Yes it was in part that by comparison to the 1992 film Sneakers (and of course reality itself) it was wildly inaccurate, but as someone who remembers Eternal September* the film Hackers became its own version of that with a massive influx of newbies on security and hacker mailing lists and USENET channels saying "Teach me how to hack" who wanted instant results and would not respond well to pointers to papers and whatnot filled with technical details. "But I want to hack, not do homework!" was a reply I remember seeing that summed up a common feeling amongst newbs. Trying to explain that the film exaggerated and was fiction simply fell on deaf ears for many.
And that is why I hate the movie Hackers. Just remembering the film Sneakers that starred Robert Redford (RIP).
🕯️ Personal Update | Honoring My Fallen Friend at Kyiv’s Independence Square 🇺🇦
Today I visited Oleg Salynk, age 28, from #Kherson —a #humanitarian volunteer who embodied courage, compassion, and an unforgettable sense of humor.
Oleg welcomed me during both of my trips to Kherson in 2023 and 2024. He always said to me with a smile, “It’s ok, bro,” as we practiced translating English and Ukrainian.
🙏🏽 I would’ve traveled here for no other reason than to honor him.
