Indigenous actor Elaine Miles, best known for her roles in "Northern Exposure," "Smoke Signals," Wyvern" and "The Last of Us," was stopped by ICE earlier this month in Redmond, Wa. She showed her tribal ID from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon, a federally recognized form of identification. An agent called her document "fake," saying "anyone can make that." She was released shortly afterwards, but says in a social media post that a similar thing happened to both her son and uncle. Brazilian artivist Mundano delivered a striking art installation to demand world leaders take bold action for forests at #COP30.
The ashes used in the performance were taken from the Anambé Indigenous land, near Belém, in 2024, when the territory was impacted by forest fires.
Carolina Pasquali, Executive Director, Greenpeace Brazil said:
“Time is running out at #COP30. We cannot leave this COP with symbolic gestures, voluntary commitments or vague promises. We need a concrete, time-bound action plan to end deforestation in all forests by 2030.”

Groups living in voluntary isolation have “minimal to no contact with those outside of their own group,” said Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee, director general of the Forest Stewardship Council & an #IndigenousRights expert based in Germany. “A simple cold that you & I recover from in a week…they could die of that cold.”
Beyond disease, contact can destroy livelihoods & belief systems. #InternationalLaw requires free, prior & informed consent — known as #FPIC — before any activity on #IndigenousLands.
Public debate is also shaped by #stereotypes — some romanticize them as “lost tribes,” while others view them as barriers to #development.
