After posting about archives, I'm realizing that I can't remember ever using an archive.

The Internet Archive is a library, according to its homepage and Wikipedia. Is AO3 a true archive, or also more of a library? I've read a couple fanfics there, like the Old English Star Trek fanfic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/42430848

Anyway if I want to better understand what an archive is, what are some archives I can and should access in the Philly area or online? What do you use an archive for?

I feel most librarians would not consider a Little Free Library to be a true library, that's just a bookshelf! (Correct me if I'm wrong.) But what is the simplest library using the least resources that would be a meaningful library?

Can a private collection of artifacts become a museum simply by opening access to the public?

Our university library has one of the cooler archival fonds around: the Syd Bolton Collection. It's comprised of almost 14,000 video games and hundreds of consoles and systems, along with over 5,000 issues of game magazines, hundreds of books and literature, peripherals, and related technology, materials, and documents. It is one of the largest collections of its kind in the world and the largest known in Canada.
