Thanks for mentioning _IBM & the Holocaust_ earlier this year & again. I've mentioned that book in talks for years — not just for its content, but for the meta-issue: #IBM's (relatively successful) PR campaigns to keep the book & its research marginalized.

Hello fellow #retrocomputing enthusiasts. Do I happen to be connected to anyone who knows about an #IBM #RS6k 43P-150?
Mine is dead as a door nail. When booting I get "Unexpected Firmware Error:
DEFAULT CATCH!, code=fff00200 at %SRR0: 00c194d8 %SRR1: 00083030"
And the debug LCD reads E1DC.
If I take out the PCI riser it boots to the RS/6000 boot menu and everything works. Got a replacement riser, but then the system doesn't even get to the 0> prompt, the debug LCD just reads 888

Ieri la mia bimba più piccola è venuta a casa piangendo perché i suoi compagni di scuola sostengono che "gli #hacker sono tutti cattivi e rubano i dati".
La mia prima risposta è stata che al momento i maggiori ladri e ricettatori di dati sono #Google, #Microsoft, #Amazon, #Facebook, #IBM e #Apple (la #GMAFIA, ex #GAFAM).
Quando però mi ha risposto mortificata che aveva provato a spiegarlo, ma loro gli dicevano che questi sono "i buoni che ci difendono dagli hacker", ho provato a cercare con lei il termine hacker sulla enciclopedia #Treccani che, sebbene proponga una definizione un po' stereotipata e superficiale, almeno mi ha aiutato a rassicurarla che il suo papà non è un mostro cattivo.
Che sarà di quei bimbi che credono ciecamente nella bontà delle #BigTech?

"AI companies are spending billions on data centers in the race to AGI. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has some thoughts on the math behind those bets.
Data center spending is on the rise. During Meta's recent earnings call, words like "capacity" and AI "infrastructure" were frequently used. Google just announced that it wants to eventually build them in space. The question remains: will the revenue generated from data centers ever justify all the capital expenditure?
On the "Decoder" podcast, Krishna concluded that there was likely "no way" these companies would make a return on their capex spending on data centers.
Couching that his napkin math was based on today's costs, "because anything in the future is speculative," Kirshna said that it takes about $80 billion to fill up a one-gigawatt data center.
"Okay, that's today's number. So, if you are going to commit 20 to 30 gigawatts, that's one company, that's $1.5 trillion of capex," he said.
Krishna also referenced the depreciation of the AI chips inside data centers as another factor: "You've got to use it all in five years because at that point, you've got to throw it away and refill it," he said."
