Guess what % of plastics have been #recycled? No prizes :(

A Sankey diagram shows how a total of the 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic ever produced by humanity has ended up either being totally discarded, incinerated or still in use. 31% are still in use. The remainder have been dumped or burnt.

This is so staggeringly serious in its own right and also continues to be a compelling metaphor for AI, which is all ending up in the digital ocean, and we will never be able to get it out.

@kate

OMG this is, as you say, staggeringly serious: (from the abstract) “Scientists have now confirmed that the most abundant form of plastic in the Atlantic is in the form of nanoplastics, smaller than a micrometer. These particles are everywhere: in rain, rivers, and even the air. They may already be infiltrating entire ecosystems, including the human brain, and researchers say prevention—not cleanup—is our only hope.” 😐
Prevention! What hope is there of that? We’re doomed!
