Brrr... new introduction time cause my old one is already outdated lol.
I am Sinclair-Speccy, your local resident computer nerd that can’t actually do a lot of tech stuff like people think. My primary interests are #Linux, #OldTech, and #OStan. You’ll usually find me boosting retro tech content and occasionally posting it myself, mostly retro tech ads.
My interest in emulation all started when I managed to run Yggdrasil Linux from the '90s (I know, so interesting /s). Despite having used 😜 as my first OS other older OSes (mostly Linux ones) interest me more if you look at the media I've posted on my account besides the tech ads.
I’ve moved around a bit online as I started on .art as my friend was there, then bitbang.social and now oldbytes.space.
One of my favourite niche fandoms is OS-tans which is turning operating systems and hardware into anime characters, though I tend to call them tech gijinkas. I even have my own tech gijinkas universe that is hosted on my site.
As for some other stuff I enjoy #mythology, #transformers, #cats, #touhou, #fantasy, #nature such as #flowers and #plants and #animals, #steampunk, #starwars, #photography, #art, #space, #cyberpunk and #scifi... there is more but I'm not writing them all.
You can check out my website here: https://sinclair-speccy.github.io/The-Mainframe/index.html and I hope to expand it into a tech journalism platform or something, though motivation and its static nature kind of stop me...
Unlike in the past I'm not active as I used to be, sadly.

⚙️🫡 Steampunk Commander. An abandoned #ArtDeco control room inside an emergency standby powerplant, somewhere in #Belgium.
Navy blue panels line the walls, each set with analogue dials and levers. Two removed dials rest on the central desk, like top hats left behind by a Steampunk gentleman. Large windows and skylights fill the room with soft late-afternoon light.

An outrageous claim and the rabbit hole that followed

After the trip to Genoa, I went to Rimini, on the other side of Italy, and visited the Italia in Miniatura theme park because it has a monorail. A simple loop around the park, with one station about as far from the entrance as it’s possible to get, it was a fun way to view the detailed scale models of famous Italian buildings below. But one thing caught my attention: a claim that this was Italy’s first electric monorail. Now, while the park was opened in 1970, the monorail wasn’t added until 2001 or so. This claim is somewhat dubious, when you consider that, not too far away, the Mirabilandia theme park had an electric monorail that operated between 1992 and 2019. Another theme park, Gardaland, has had an electric monorail since 1990.
So, what was the first electric monorail in Italy?
Well, Expo ’61 had an ALWEG monorail that was essentially the same as the one in Seattle.
The Turin monorail. Jean-Henri Manara, Wikimedia Commons, License CC BY-SA 2.0One of the stations still exists, but my trip to Genoa reminded me that this isn’t the first electric monorail in Italy by a long way.

The “Italian Colonial International Exhibition of Marine and Marine Hygiene” in 1914 had a quite impressive monorail, known as the “Telfer”, running along the seafront. A poster from the time describes it as a “Ferrovia Elletrica”, so definitely electric! After the exhibition closed, the monorail remained in use for a few years moving coal and goods around.
During my visit, a friend and I tried to trace the route, and see if anything remained. Unfortunately, the way was blocked by a small military base, but we did find the spot where a large arch had been smashed into a building to allow the monorail to go through the Stella Battery.

Roger Farnworth has written an excellent, copiously illustrated, article about the Telfer, so I will simply refer you there: Genoa – a Telfer
And that is, probably, the first electric monorail in Italy. The only earlier monorail I know about is a steam-powered, cable-hauled one that went up Mount Vesuvius.

The headmaster sighed as he signed the contract. It made sense for the school to be used in the evenings when it was empty. And it would help make ends meet, with all the recent cutbacks.
"Make sure everything is clean and tidy by 7am, or the deal is off."
The woman across the desk from him nodded, "We will." She was wearing a steampunk outfit, complete with a bizarre monocle in one eye.
"One more thing: Let me show you how to turn off the CCTV."
And so began a beautiful partnership, with evening adult activities in the school growing and flourishing. On different nights you might find erotic poetry readings in the classrooms; kink performance in the auditorium; make your own sex toys sessions in the workshop; and furries jumping on the equipment in the gymnasium — and on each other. There were even naked cookery lessons in the kitchen. No one was sure what the steampunk crew were doing in the lab.
The local alternative communities thrived, and the school saved the library and offered free hot meals for those in need.
