🆕 blog! “Book Review: Exterminate/Regenerate - The Story of Doctor Who by John Higgs”
★★★★☆

The problem with fans is that we want to know everything. What did Lennon eat for breakfast the day he recorded Imagine? Which colour pencil did the script editor use on our favourite episode of Doctor Who? Did the costume designer on Buffy…

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Sky Daddy by Kate Folk”
★★★⯪☆

What - and I cannot stress this enough - the actual ever-loving fuck!?

OK, perhaps it was a mistake to start reading this while on an international flight. The book concerns Linda, a content moderator at an endlessly sub-contracted tech company, who is in love with planes. No, strike that, she is excessively sexually attracted to the …

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Sublimation by Isabel J. Kim”
★★★★★

This is an astounding bit of high-concept sci-fi. Imagine a world where crossing a border literally split your body in two. A young woman emigrates from South Korea - one version of her stays in Seoul, another version goes off to live in New York. This is the way humanity has always existed. People…

This is an an interesting and varied set of sci-fi/fantasy stories. Some barely a couple of pages, others cutting short at just the right time. They are all on a similar theme - the strife between parents and children. Whether it is a twisted take on classic fairy…

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Under the Eye of the Big Bird - Hiromi Kawakami”

This is an intriguing and mostly satisfying sci-fi tale. It has shades of Oryx Crake mixed in with A Canticle for Leibowitz - we are mere observers of the tattered remains of humanity. Watchers guide scattered settlements as they strive to evolve and understand their place on a…

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Room 706 by Ellie Levenson”
★★★★★

I cracked open my review copy of Room 706 and settled in for an early night in my hotel room. I was up until way past midnight tearing through the book - my heart pounding. Given that the book centres around a woman trapped by terrorists in her hotel room, it was perhaps not the best choice to read on holiday!

If…

WAYNE'S 2025 BOOKS: BOOK 8

The Internet Con
by Cory Doctorow
( @pluralistic)

I will never not boost the work of Cory Doctorow, even if most of the time I'm not big-brained enough to follow every thread that he lays down.

This book talks about interoperability, and how it's something that most people don't realise that they need more of in their life, and how it's been criminalised in the name of keeping citizens in the thrall of Big Tech. What's interoperability? If you've ever wondered why messages don't work properly across the iPhone/Android divide, or why you can't easily leave Facebook for another social media platform, or why you're not allowed to repair your own tractor, then you know something about why interoperability is important but restricted by tech gatekeepers. It's easy to make a device that can perform any sort of computation, but they're always locked down – for whatever reason, usually profit – and this hobbling of the devices and platforms you own and engage with is an ongoing restriction on your personal data and belongings.

Doctorow shows the problem through a great series of examples – search engines, operating systems, VCRs, copyright infringement notices, deliberately-borked internet treaties, and so on – in his typical very-readable fashion. The first third of the book is a hit list of things you didn't realise made the world just a little bit more shitty... or enshittified.

The book pivots to discussing interoperability and federation, before throwing some problems up into the air that he opines can be solved with that one simple trick that the technofeudalists hate: better regulation.

I'll never not read a Cory Doctorow book, but I wish now and then that some of the solutions for which he advocates were implemented, rather than each new year bringing another set to examples for him to inevitably use in the opening chapters of his next book.

🆕 blog! “Book Review: The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer”
★★★★☆

This is delightful whimsy wrapped up in a sensible chuckle. The sort of gigglesome nonsense that washes over you and worms its way into your ears. There's a hint of caper, a soupçon of cosy crime, and a sprinkling of a love story.

And then there's a massive tonal shift where it all becomes rather menacing …
