💀 Seven Diabetes Patients Die Due to Undisclosed Bug in Abbott's Continuous Glucose Monitors

「 The FDA reports that Freestyle injured over 700 people and killed seven people with this bug. Specifically, the bug caused the device to falsely report an extremely low glucose level. Advanced stage diabetics use low reading information to inform them that they may have too much insulin currently 」

Seven Diabetes Patients Die Due to Undisclosed Bug in Abbott's Continuous Glucose Monitors

I wrote last month about my diabetes diagnosis this year and my difficult choice to wear a proprietary device (called a CGM) on my arm 24/7 to continuously monitor my glucose levels. Like my friend and colleague, Karen M. Sandler — who previously made a much higher-stakes choice to receive a proprietary implanted defibrillator to keep her safe given her genetic heart condition — I reluctantly chose to attach proprietary hardware and software to my body.

This week, our rules on reducing plastic pellets, a major source of microplastics in the environment, came into force:

🧹 companies must have spill clean-up and risk management plans for packaging, handling, and equipment
🚛 non-EU carriers must have an EU representative
📃 operators handling >1500 tonnes of pellets annually need to obtain a certificate of compliance
⛴️ requirements for maritime transport

For us, our oceans and wildlife.

New law reducing microplastic pollution enters into force

The new rules will help ensure fair competition across the Single Market and support Europe’s transition to a sustainable economy.
The image shows a stylized illustration titled "Battling the Ninja-microplastics." It features a ninja figure in the centre, composed of small dots representing plastic pellets, with an intense expression and a crouched stance. On either side of the ninja, there are illustrations of aquatic creatures, including fish and shrimp, along with blue coral-like plants. The background is white, and the image includes the EU flag at the bottom right corner. The overall theme appears to be about combating microplastics in the environment.

Microplastics seems to be harmful for health of humans and other animals and so stealing our healthspan and possibly lifespan. While the real leverage for robust #longevity is biotechnology, removing such annoying things like #microplastics is very helpful. That way the aging damage removal can be easier to done, so available sooner and costing less. Many thanks 🙏

It pairs well with your push for #biotech and health union 👍

Jobs at Novonesis in Denmark (Lyngby)

Our area in Novonesis has just posted 4 job openings:

  • Site Reliability Engineer - I think this is what we used to call system administrator; hands on a bunch of machines running Ubuntu in a dedicated server room, take care of a backup robot with a thousand tapes, petabytes of distributed storage, an HPC cluster with thousands of cores, etc. etc.
  • MLOps Specialist - help putting machine learning into the hands of the scientists in research and development.
  • Platform Engineer - be part of the team running our on-premise Data Science Platform, which allows everybody in research and development to store, work with, find, and analyze data. Python, databases, Jupyter notebooks, and automation.
  • Lab Operations Specialist - networks, VLANs, firewalls and making things work across lab equipment vendors' odd choices of operating systems and setups.

If you like Linux, are good at any of these things, and are curious and interested - apply! I can recommend not using AI for your application, you'll be standing out ;-)

A new generative deep-learning system, BioEmu, has achieved a scientific breakthrough in protein modeling. Led by Prof. Dr. Frank Noé and Prof. Dr. Cecilia Clementi (Freie Universität Berlin/Microsoft Research), BioEmu accurately predicts structural ensembles and thermodynamic properties, including hidden binding pockets and protein stability changes. The technology and code are freely available.
