"With the new Jolla Phone, we’re taking TOH even further — and we’ll open source the hardware and software interface specs so anyone can design, 3D-print, or produce their own modules. Primarily we plan that the new The Other Half interface would be based on I³C." #oshw #jolla
⏰ Still 14 hours left to vote.
Just like we defined the next gen Jolla Phone together with the community, we’re now doing the same with The Other Half.
We’ll open up what’s technically possible, you vote on what we should build, and together we design something genuinely unique.
Comments stay open after voting closes, but if you haven’t voted yet, now’s the moment. Every vote counts.

@pluralistic This idea needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Piggybacking has the potential to make so many open source hardware projects a reality which simply wouldn't otherwise be possible!
We as a community should come up with a way to crowdsource this - some way to connect people with cool hardware designs to people in manufacturing who are willing to piggyback their designs in.
If Andrew "bunnie" Huang didn't exist, I'd swear he was a character out of a(n extraordinarily technologically well-informed) cyberpunk novel. Every time I interact with this legendary hardware hacker, he blows my mind with some project or insight that permanently alters how I think about tech.

Just a reminder that I'm helping set up the Open Hardware CAD/CAM dev room for #FOSDEM this year. Do please consider coming and talking about your amazing #opensource hardware projects. The Cfp for this room is opne till Dec 5th, but it's really quick to put in a talk proposal now! https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2026/cfp boosts welcome! #OSHW
So, thinking about making a #oshw coloring book. But let's do some research first:
What are the three projects you think of when thinking about open source hardware? Could be your favorites, or what you'd consider the most famous ones. Let's hear it 😀

Back on the @MCQN_Ltd My Bike's Got LED packaging kick for this #FreeCADFriday
I'd done a bit more work on it on Monday too and tried cutting it out. That wasn't too bad, but the tabs to hold the panel with the PCB on didn't keep it in place.
So today I reworked that bit to have the side panels to hold the battery hook over the PCB panel. That holds things much better.

Hey hive mind - I'm keen to start a PhD and move toward academia, and am thinking about potential research topics. I'm an experienced structural #engineer and want to transition toward #sustainability as much as I can. But I'm not sure what that means for viable #research areas...
I have particular expertise in mechanics of #materials, software development ( #Python and #JavaScript), and cold-formed steel / #buckling of thin-walled structures.
Anyone out there have any suggestions for specific topics or general directions?
There's a research group based at Cambridge Uni, in hte UK, who are working on Low CO2-Emission production of steel.
Last I read about them, they were working on a 60 tonne furnace. 😁
Also, the #FreeCAD suggestion is a good idea.
One of the main libraries used in proprietary CAD systems is the materials libraries for simulations. An #OSHW #FLOSS version would be a fundable project. :D
The only scary bit of this #FreeCADFriday is using the sheet metal workbench again (I had trouble getting it to unfold last time I tried, but that was *many* versions ago. Seems much nicer so far)
Working on some packaging options for the @MCQN_Ltd My Bike's Got LED kits
Nice write-up from @concretedog about our @oshwassociation certified bike soundsystem relay setup, and how I used both @FreeCAD and @kicad to make it.
[edit: now with added link! 🤣 ]
