Federal workers: The government shutdown may have ended, but we know that many of you are still dealing with its lasting repercussions.
We want to hear from you. Here's how to securely reach out: https://propublica.org/tips
The #USDA is requiring #SNAP recipients to reapply for benefits. They already do so every six months. If pain is the point, why not make them apply every month?

#Trump admin to fire worker for TV interview about #SNAP

…The threat of Mei’s dismissal has sparked concerns & outrage among other USDA workers & members of the Federal Unionists Network, who argue that the move is part of a concerted effort by the #Trump admin to chill #speech among federal employees.
At the time Mei spoke to MSNBC, the information she shared was publicly available through a variety of news articles & guidance from anti-hunger advocates, think tanks & organizations.
#USDA itself, in a memo dated Sept30, explained that #SNAP funding would lapse because of the #shutdown & that the #OMB would use contingency reserves to pay for benefits past Oct. That memo, however, was scrubbed from the agency’s website later in Oct, once the #Trump admin began arguing against tapping contingency funds to pay for benefits.
In the MSNBC interview, host Chris Jansing also explained that Mei was speaking as herself & a #union leader, not a USDA employee.

The next day, #USDA informed Mei that the process to remove her from her position had begun. In correspondence reviewed by WaPo, an official in the USDA human resources dept told Mei that she will be let go 30 days after the #shutdown ends. The agency accused Mei of discussing USDA programs & funding “without prior approval.”

In the 4-min interview, Mei said she & her co-workers are “anxious because we’re hearing about the risk potentials & office closures that are looming over #USDA as this #shutdown kind of drags on.” She also explained that funding for key #FoodAssistance programs, including #SNAP — which feeds ~42M Americans monthly — would probably be available in October, but that “things might get a little dicey if this drags on into November.”
[gee such a fireable offense!]

The employee, Ellen Mei, a program specialist at the #Food & #Nutrition Service who is furloughed, was interviewed on MSNBC on Oct 2, during the early days of the #shutdown, to talk about how the impasse in Washington would impact her team, as well as the work they do. Mei is also president of the National Treasury Employees #Union’s Chapter 255, which represents employees at #USDA’s Food & Nutrition Service in the Northeast.

These #politicians and their #poverty #porn posts of eating on "$6/person/day", when they have *clearly* never actually had to live on a tight #budget, let alone a #SNAP #FoodStamps budget.
Last night, I bought 12 chicken drumsticks for $0.99/lb, or $4.27 for 4.31 lbs (1.955 Kg) of drumsticks. That's enough meat for six adult portions, and the skin and bones make their own sauce while you cook them.
No one is walking away from my table #hungry or disappointed and dissatisfied.
This is important to understand:
The problem is not that the federal government doesn't have the money to pay #SNAP benefits. Tax revenue hasn't stopped coming in during the shutdown. There is plenty of money.
The problem is that the the #Trump administration and the corrupt #SCOTUS are just fine with upending precedent and rewriting laws to give Trump and the #GOP more power, but not with interpreting existing law in a completely reasonable way to feed starving children.

Does anyone have a detailed breakdown of what's in the funding bill? (But higher than the text itself)
All I found was on #SNAP was "will fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, through Sept. 30, 2026."
Curious when the #OBBB Payment Error Rate scoring system was supposed to go in effect. In other words, did Senate D's get 9 months of relief for recipients and state budgets or not?
