In the fall of 1997 I jumped out of bed every morning at 6 to go program in Perl and Javascript. What was I so excited about? I was creating one of the world's first sign language synthesis apps.
Five years later, I had essentially stopped development. Since then I've been cited many times by developers headed for the same dead end.
The bottom line is that we're not creating anything that Deaf people find valuable.

Pari päivää sitten katsoin vanhoja peruskouluajan luokkakuviani. Luokkamme oli aina pieni. Neljä oppilasta. 3 kuuroa ja minä, vaikeasti huonokuuloinen ja ainoana puheella kommunikoiva viittomakielen lisäksi.
Asetelma oli alusta asti erikoinen kohdallani. Jostain syystä minua ei haluttu laittaa muiden vaikeasti huonokuuloisten kanssa samaan luokkaan. Sen sijaan minut laitettiin kuurojen luokkaan, jossa kukaan ei puhunut ja opetuskielenä on 100% suomalainen viittomakieli.
Kotona en voinut käyttää suomalaista viittomakieltä, sillä kukaan perheenjäsenistämme ei viittonut puhtaasti suomalaista viittomakieltä. Synnyttäjäni osasi kyllä perusviittomia käyttää sujuvasti. Se oli lähinnä tukiviittomista, mutta kuitenkin. Tästä syystä minulla on 2 äidinkieltä ja molempia käytän täysin natiivisti.
Vaikka kieliä oli käytössä kaksi, niin siinä tuli vielä mukana kulttuuri. Minun piti aina kotona laittaa kuurojen "maailmasta" sisäistetty kulttuuritietoisuus syrjään siksi aikaan, kun elelin kuulevien "maailmassa". Siellä ei ymmärretty tiettyjä juttuja. Sama oli toisinpäin.
