What is #democracy worth without #citizens' #privacy rights? Abandoning parts of the #GDPR for #BigTech undermines democracy and opens the door to 1930s-style #dictatorship and mass #surveillance. Wasn't the EU founded precisely to ensure this would never happen again? Honor your humble foundations or ther is no more need for the #EU.

Last week, federal #immigration agents targeted #Evanston, #Illinois, a northern #Chicago suburb that is home to #Northwestern, in a sweep that included a raid of a #retirement community. On Oct 31, 3 US #citizens who were watching a woman's violent arrest were shoved into an agent's car & driven around for hours before they were released at an FBI field office without charges, acc/to a court filing in a federal case brought by journalists & protesters against agents' #UseOfForce.

The woman, who was identified in a parents' text group shared with Reuters as Diana Santillana, a #teacher in the #infant classroom from Medellin, Colombia, could be heard saying in Spanish, "I have papers."

The agents grabbed the teacher in front of children, US Rep Mike Quigley, an #Illinois #Democrat, said in a statement. Shocked #parents …said the #school had recently told them that all the teachers were legally authorized to work….

The scene at the #farm on Thursday was chaotic, with #federal agents wearing helmets & face #masks using #TearGas & smoke cannisters on #protesters, according to photos & videos of the scene.

Several #farmworkers were injured & one died on Friday from injuries sustained after a 30-foot fall from a building during the #raid, said Elizabeth Strater, national vice president of the #UnitedFarmWorkers.

The move is aimed at #US #citizens not born in the country;…close to 25M #immigrants [are] #naturalized citizens.

At least one person has already been denaturalized. On June 13, a judge ordered the revocation of Elliott Duke’s #citizenship, who uses they/them pronouns. Duke is an #American #military #veteran originally from the #UK who was convicted for distributing child sexual abuse material—something they later admitted they were doing prior to becoming a US citizen.
