Last week, federal #immigration agents targeted #Evanston, #Illinois, a northern #Chicago suburb that is home to #Northwestern, in a sweep that included a raid of a #retirement community. On Oct 31, 3 US #citizens who were watching a woman's violent arrest were shoved into an agent's car & driven around for hours before they were released at an FBI field office without charges, acc/to a court filing in a federal case brought by journalists & protesters against agents' #UseOfForce.
The woman, who was identified in a parents' text group shared with Reuters as Diana Santillana, a #teacher in the #infant classroom from Medellin, Colombia, could be heard saying in Spanish, "I have papers."
The agents grabbed the teacher in front of children, US Rep Mike Quigley, an #Illinois #Democrat, said in a statement. Shocked #parents …said the #school had recently told them that all the teachers were legally authorized to work….

But #immigration #law experts expressed serious concerns about the effort's constitutionality, & how this could impact #families of naturalized #citizens.
🚨 The #DOJ memo says that the federal govt will pursue #denaturalization cases via #civil #litigation — an especially concerning move, said Cassandra Robertson, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University.
The move is aimed at #US #citizens not born in the country;…close to 25M #immigrants [are] #naturalized citizens.
At least one person has already been denaturalized. On June 13, a judge ordered the revocation of Elliott Duke’s #citizenship, who uses they/them pronouns. Duke is an #American #military #veteran originally from the #UK who was convicted for distributing child sexual abuse material—something they later admitted they were doing prior to becoming a US citizen.
