"learners with lower prior knowledge, because they lack the foundational understanding needed to make sense of abstract representations, benefit from actively performing actions. In contrast, learners who have higher prior knowledge will learn better from observing actions as it enables more opportunity for connection-making and transfer."

From curious beginner to dedicated mentor; meet Luai Waleed from Egypt. When Luai first joined Neuromatch Academy (NMA)’s Deep Learning Course, he had no experience in deep learning, just curiosity and a willingness to learn. What he discovered changed his path. 🎤 “Through Neuromatch, I turned my curiosity into a deep scientific understanding, and that lens still shapes how I view the field today. It was challenging as a complete beginner but deeply rewarding. I worked on a meaningful project that helped me apply what I was learning. With Neuromatch, I built a strong foundation in deep learning and learned how to think like a researcher.” That first experience inspired him to give back. Today, Luai mentors new learners, bringing the same spirit of collaboration and curiosity to his local community. He also volunteers with Neuromatch. 🎤 “I wanted others to feel what I felt at NMA, that mix of support, challenge, and discovery. Now I get to help others grow, and it is incredibly fulfilling. As a volunteer reviewer for the Impact Scholar Program, I treat every proposal as if it could change someone’s life because I know firsthand that it can. The volunteer atmosphere at Neuromatch is incredibly supportive and collaborative. Repeating tests was linked to an increase in use of online study resources.

@adamgreenfield yes but there is intentionality. We bend the arc towards justice it doesn’t just go. I am more than the answer to the prayers of my enslaved ancestors. I am the result of their actions. I was born in Brooklyn and not in the south because my family wanted something Better than #segregation and they had the means to make it so.

@adamgreenfield What will we dream of and for? What seeds will we plant? I'd really like us to stop blunting the dreams of young folks toward getting #jobs.What I want is to see is the focus of #STEMEducation shift towards making #firstcontact and away from getting a job pushing papers from one side of the desk or screen to the other.
