Imagine it has a big internal storage and/or SDcard, and it's running a custom ROM (a Mobile GNU distro) intended for the purpose. Plus it's permanently plugged into power and connected to reliable WiFi.

Is this something we could realistically repurpose old mobiles for if they don't support 4G calling?

Guess who discovered Python "textual" TUI framework today!

I tried creating an interactive mode for freedom-maker.

$ python3 -m freedom-maker --interactive

is the command to trigger it.

There's even a Select All feature. One trigger to do all the new stable builds once Debian 13 is out this month!

Note: This is not in the package yet, it's just an experiment.

Once the password is entered, the build runs. The third panel in the 3-panel layout shows real-time logs from the freedom-maker process. Colored logs are supported by textual, but freedom-maker doesn't seem to produce them. I should be able to add colored logs in the TUI alone, but this is not implemented yet.

A dialog to input the sudo password of the user. This dialog is triggered by pressing the build button in the footer or by pressing the hotkey "b". I haven't figured out how to center this properly yet. This dialog will not be shown if freedom-maker command is run as root.

Took Beeware for a spin yesterday. It's just the Toga web view tutorial from the documentation page, but serving my FreedomBox web interface.

There's not much to see in terms of code. I am just amazed that it works on GTK and Android. I had to put a lot of work into resizing PNGs because the platforms expect different resolutions.

Today, I met a FreedomBox for Villages volunteer, Satya at a local conference. It was pleasant surprise to know that they have recently deployed a community Wi-Fi network in a remote island village in the Narmada river that barely has cellular phone signals. The village only has an elementary school (until class 4), so the main thing they needed to provide was Moodle with some K-12 educational content.

Another non-profit might set up satellite Internet in the near future.

I am mostly focusing on smoothing out the rough edges, like fixing bugs and making usability improvements.

Started adding a screenshot in each merge request description so that interested members of the community can also get an idea of what it is about, without reading the code.

Submitted a couple of bug fixes for TiddlyWiki and Feather Wiki apps on #FreedomBox today.
They both have the same configuration, so it's the same fix for both. Eventually, I'll get around to fixing the code duplication. Maybe. Some day.
DRYness increases complexity sometimes. It's not always worth doing.

Upgraded my home #FreedomBox today.

Moved the data from a Pioneer edition device to an old Dell laptop I used mostly for FreedomBox development. It's probably from 2017 or so, but the SSD is only two years old, so the data should be safe. Hope I will do a better job with backups this time.

It's kinda overpowered though. Core i7 (2 cores with 2 hyperthreads each) and 16 GB memory. Disk is 450 GB. I think it can comfortably run 4 FreedomBoxes if deployed as VMs instead.
