It was a whopper of an attack that topped out at 7.3 terabits per second.
It seems that community.nodebb.org is under a DDoS attack at the moment. We have enabled CloudFlare's "under attack" mode which has stopped the attack but it also has the unfortunate side effect of blocking all incoming ActivityPub traffic as well.
Interesting side effect. Will continue to monitor.

So my first evil genius robot honeypot, the word frequency one, seems to be getting hit by a distributed botnet.
It started around 2-3 requests per second but seems to be ramping up.
It's using IP addresses from all over the world - could be hacked personal devices? - and a wide range of plausible-looking User Agent strings.
My server is fine for now - 95% idle CPU.
Are there people for whom any of the IP or agent data might be useful? Botnet detectorists?

For those that don't know, when you have a bunch of followers and you link to a website, mastodon, and I'm assuming others, immediately attempts to resolve that. So every hosts checks I. To your server all at once and crushes it. 😄 lol but we live and learn. And we're making plans to prevent that in the future.

Attention server admins! Yesterday I've read a post by @simon_brooke how nasty AI scraper bots are attacking his self-hosted @forgejo instance. Soon after I'm seeing unusual, periodic traffic spikes on mine and again - dominated by OpenAI, but some other freeloaders too:

For now blocked IP ranges and User-Agent combinations, not sure for how long that will be enough
