Today, major French unions organized massive nationwide protest, leaving transport, schools, and other public services paralyzed.
The reason for protests are governmental planned €44B cuts in the next budget, with pensions, health, education, public sector at risk, while keeping planned militarization intact.

Martin Kettle uses the crisis in prisons as an example of a wider crisis of governance across the country... and to draw out one specific issue (and use a phrase he doesn't), the various crises are excavated by the problem of a rigid Treasury oversight, which 'know the cost of everything & the value of nothing'.
This is forcing departments into a constant crisis management & constraining any forward planning to actually resolve crises!
Its idiocy!

The growing amount of money and assets of the 1%, NATO's 5% and ReArm Europe, and austerity for the rest of us (meaning premature death for us) are all related.
