FreeBSD 15.0-ALPHA4 Now Available

<https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-stable/2025-September/003265.html>

― FREEBSD-UPDATE SHOULD NOT BE USED TO UPGRADE TO 15.0-ALPHA4 AT PRESENT.

<https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1ns5onx/comment/ngjiwl9/> pictures a successful major upgrade that used pkg instead of freebsd-update.

FreeBSD: pkgbase: major upgrades

<https://gist.github.com/grahamperrin/a58edbb8587af513a154ac01d922f611#file-pkgbase-major-upgrade-md-readme>

― a rough guide, for alpha testing on AMD64.

From <https://redd.it/1nlo8lp>:

❮ An obvious response to the roughness: it's more complicated than legacy freebsd-update(8) (for FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE). True; this is for alpha testing.

Please read the preamble before anything else. If you have any question, please don't hesitate to ask. ❯

An in-place #FreeBSD pkg-base conversion completed successfully. I wouldn't want to do that to a large fleet (not sure how you'd ansible it), but will be a lot easier for new builds. #pkgbase

As #FreeBSD moves from far-from-perfect freebsd-update(8) to #PKGBASE that will be handled by separate pkg(8) repository - keep in mind that #FreeBSD will still have its #Base#System separate from third party pkg(8) packages.

Some details below.

#FreeBSD I just upgraded my systems using #pkgbase and I can tell you it’s fscking awesome. I have been running CURRENT for years, building from source, and this is a game changer.

pkgbase is actually already available in 14.3 but … erm … we haven’t quite got the documentation sorted yet. Working on it!
