Girls in single-sex schools face major STEM access gaps - survey
More than half of girls in single-sex schools see limited subject choice as a barrier to pursuing careers in #science, #technology, #engineering and #maths (STEM), according to a new survey.
The annual Survey of Female Students' Attitudes to STEM was conducted by I Wish, a national non-profit organisation that empowers girls to see the potential of STEM.
The research shows that among the 2,335 Transition Year female students surveyed in single-sex schools, just 5% reported access to construction studies and 6% to engineering, compared with 84% and 74% respectively in mixed schools.
According to the study, 55% of girls in single-sex schools cite limited subject choice as a barrier to STEM, versus 37% in mixed schools.
The report calls for urgent action to ensure equal access to #STEM education for every girl in #Ireland.

My MIL passed away in August. She was about to turn 105 and participated in many of the No Kings events in Mt. Kisco, NY. She was a plasma physicist, grew up with Einstein as a family friend and is the reason why NY water is clean and frakking is banned. Her obituary is frankly, amazing. #STEM #science #activism #climatechange https://www.therecorder.org/post/marian-rose-104-bedford-resident-scientist-and-longtime-activist
I'm gobsmacked at how many people took the time here to read and share the obituary of my MIL Marian, a plasma physicist & environmental hero.
She was the 1st female teaching fellow at Harvard's physics dept & earned her PhD there, despite being refused access to the library (misogyny). All the more relevant as UK universities risk closure of physics depts.
Another story about her https://www.therecorder.org/post/centenarian-marian-rose-was-an-activist-to-the-end

With this car Volkswagen Group España Distribucion is touring to places in Spain where there is a low participation of girls and young women in #STEM, and they do readings and screenings of "Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream" + do 3D printing with them.
