Is #ListenBrainz down? Can’t load it… 🧐
@ListenBrainz
It was so hard to get out of bed this morning
It was really helpful to listen to Fog Lavender by Blooms Corda while cycling to the studio.
Another year, another @ListenBrainz Year in Music! 🥳

This can be seen as a follow up to yesterday's post where I shared my Spotify Wrapped. As someone who is a fan of statistics, I soon missed Last.fm, which I quit some years a go, for a couple of reasons, with the most important one being they had two data breaches, which they tried to hide, and only admitted, once the passwords where available in databases on the darknet. Thanks, last.fm! Oh, and thanks again!
Someone who doesn't care the slightest bit about your data but wants to collect it all, is someone you shouldn't support. But whom am I telling this on the #fediverse?
The cool thing: Once I started missing it, a couple of year ago, I started looking for an alternative and found one in #listenbrainz - it's basically the same as last.fm, but it's community driven, open source, and your data belongs to you (you can donwload everything in JSON format, if you want to).
Plus, it is liked to #musicbrainz and uses the DB that many applications already use for tagging their music (open source and commercial alike!), and that is also community driven.
The great thing about listenbrainz, though: You can scrobbel from most open source applications you might use; so for me CDs and .opus files are automatically scrobbled. Plus, I have a clever player that also plays from a couple of online sources which also get scrobbled in turn: YouTube, BandCamp, SoundCloud. And there is support for Spotify as well. And last but not least: You can even manually scrobble, which I use for my Vinyl listens (whenever I don't forget 😄 ).
As you can see the image generation is not always the best, but it's actually a website, that you can share, like this: https://listenbrainz.org/user/pygospa/year-in-music/2025/
The cool thing are the interactive parts, like the world map, where you can click the countries, etc. And if you missed my last years, just scroll back to those years.

#listenbrainz has a really nice "2025 in music" view ^^

Oooh it’s time to share my year in music 2025, joyfully generated with @ListenBrainz!
I am not as satisfied with it as I was in previous years, but the wild range of genres and artists truly reflects the diversity of my listens. I love it.
I am most proud of C.U.R.A. by Dietro L’Angolo, a local rap collective from La Pigna, Sanremo, appearing there. They are my friends and I have been listening to them endlessly since they performed at @scambi in August 2025. I am also the one who added their album to @musicbrainz 😉

I primi cinque sono «Flamingo Tower» dei Monde UFO, dominatore indiscusso, «Welcome to the Civilized World» dei Ghostwoman, «Radiance Opposition» dei Julie's Haircut, «Kick it Over» dei Motorbike e «Land of the Blind» dei Dunes.
It seems #ListenBrainz might be what I am looking for. Will feed it some nonsense through the Android app and see how the recommendations work.
I hope scrobbling from dedicated music players (e.g. using #RockBox firmware) and bidirectional integrations into desktop apps will work as well as from the phone soon.
If anyone is interested, this is me now:

many years ago (before its acquisition), I was a big fan of #LastFM. To this day it was the best music recommendation system I ever used. Deezer's (and I hear Spotify's), doesn't come anywhere close.
I would like to find something to fill that void - to help me find artists that I would otherwise not, based on what I listen to.
What is a good option these days?

My musical year wrapped is awfully boring, as I am a "shuffle all" enjoyer. My top albums are the albums that have the most tracks. :D
As I don't use Spotify, I'll share the #ListenBrainz cover art collage for my top 25 albums since January 2025.
It feels like that #AltText was a pain to write, doesn't it? The thing is, ListenBrainz's art creator has a handy “Copy alt text for image” link. Did that billion-dollar company think about that?
