Can any #retrocomputing nerd suggest a tool to dump every register on a #vga from #dos into a text file? Ideally also the state of the int10 interface.
Ideally I want to be able to sample the state of the VGA at different states of brokenness.
I have read the osdev wiki on the vga and I'm pretty confident I can write something myself, but I'd rather use something that is known to work so I'm not compounding the uncertainty in my debugging efforts.

After spending the last few days playing around with Linux distros from 1997-98 and comparing them to #FreeBSD 2.2.8, I'm left wondering why exactly it was Linux that ended up winning that round of the OS wars when it seems like FreeBSD was so much better? Nearly all the Linux distros I tried were at least partially broken out-of-the-box.
Best guess: lingering legal concerns vis-a-vis AT&T? 🤔

In the #dos days (before windows95),, #linux partitioning was easier for #dos people to use. Plus you could easily mount #dos disks under Linux if you dual booted. Along with that, dos utilities were created to read/write ext2. Those did not exist to write data to ufs from dos.
By 1997/8, people mainly stuck with #linux. In that period, v3&4 of #FreeBSD was awesome, but then v5 came out and that version got nothing but bad press 😞 So here we are.
New #CommonLisp library: cl-inix, a flexible #DOS/#Linux .INI/.conf file parser and processor, superseding unmaintained and inflexible cl-ini. Allows you to get .INI files parsed in the format you prefer, get values from there, and write them back however you like.
Because .INI files are underrated and deserve more use. No bullshit plaintext configuration format, for once.
