The crazy thing about that #WhatsApp leak is not merely the sheer scale of the issue...
...it's the fact that a security researcher named Loran Kloeze has found out and reported this #security flaw to #Facebook _eight years ago_ (2018) and Facebook has done... nothing!
Collecting huge amounts of data with WhatsApp - by Loran Kloeze
Also, the only news site that I could find talking about Loran Kloeze is 9to5mac - kudos to them! 🎩

It’s how humans have always lived – together
For 200 years, capitalism, for the last 40 years #neoliberalism, told us that we’re isolated individuals who compete to survive. But our actual history - and our biology - say the opposite: we’re interdependent, social, and ecological beings. For almost all of this time we thrived through commons-based systems, shared forests, grazing lands, rivers, and community knowledge. Villages maintained open wells, fishermen shared tidal calendars, and guilds protected collective craft standards. […]

Talking about grassroots media as a step away from the current #techshit
Hamish Campbell on the #openweb and rebooting indymedia
Hamish Campbell, a veteran of radical media for more than 30 years, argues that mainstream technology and culture are failing us. The rise of the #dotcon platforms has commodified our lives: closed silos like #Facebook and #Instagram harvest our attention and data, locking us into systems that serve profit, not people.
Attempts to build alternatives around an #encryptionist agenda have gone nowhere. As a result, the tech giants […]

Small things that annoy me, a lighthearted rant/
STOP IT WITH THE NOTIFICATIONS.
I do not want my day to be interrupted by a device chiming because you have a sale, your partners have a sale, your computers are feeling lonely because I haven't visited them today and would like some attention (looking at you, #Facebook), you have some new feature I will never use because it's annoying.
Every time I get a new phone, I spend a couple days disabling bunches of notifications. LEAVE ME ALONE!
💡 Today is a perfect day to exercise your independence from #BigTech, and #GiveUpGitHub.
☣️ #GitHub is the equivalent of #Twitter and #Facebook for software development -- creators of the most enticing proprietary walled garden ever made for #FOSS developers.
Don't be stuck when Microsoft decides to change the rules on you.
Start today.
💡 Unlike other #Fediverse servers, we didn't need to "wait and see" before preventing #Meta from using our community's content to train their #LLMs. When corporations show you who they are, believe them.

Our #FediPact
actions timeline:
June 2023: Preemptively blocked federation with #Meta #Facebook and #Threads. We also didn't attend any secret meetings with them or sign their NDAs.
July 2023: Blocked their IP networks from accessing our instance.
💡 Because protecting human rights shouldn't ever be something up for a vote.

Why do people keep doing pointless self harm – news aggregation
There are hundreds (over the last 20 years likely thousands) of news, aggregation sites. It’s a common #dotcons model to enclose the “commons” people see free content and think I can capture that. The problem is news content looks like it’s free, but that’s because it’s “free” to spread, but it’s VERY expensive in human (and thus money) to produce the content. This side is never addressed in these failed tech projects.
We currently have #traditionalmedia all round the world pushing to be […]
