It is just insane, how severely #Intel kneecapped i7's for scientific work. The 11th gen i7 offered the AVX512 instruction set which DOUBLED throughput compared to the previous and the NEXT i7 gen. To get the same throughput that this i7 delivers in our RNAseq workflows, one has to pay lots of dollars for a Xeon.
I’ve been gifted an old Dell server and I have no idea what to do with it. It’s got more compute than I know what to do with when compared to my laptop running proxmox. Any suggestions are welcome.
I haven’t booted it yet to confirm but from memory it’s got the following:
8x 240GB SSD
90GB RAM
2 Intel Xeon’s (not sure of the core count)
@madeindex the case actually has room for TWO DVD drives! I'm going to take them out (first time EVER) and add 4x120mm fans (right now just 3x140). I'll do 4x120mm at top too (now 3x120mm). The back'll have 1x140mm. This way I have maximum reach. Still the temperatures are EXTREMELY good even under high load. #Intel chips run quite hot but not this one! And that's with Turbo Boost too. Sadly no Hyper Threading on this one but the speeds it can get to are AMAZING.

It's been a long day. Tomorrow though, I really need this MikroTik CCR2004-1G-2XS-PCIe, running the home router, to be quiet. Therefore, lay in bed, figure out which Thermal Grizzly conductive pad is most appropriate for replacement between the NIC's heatsink.. and maybe there a STL file for making a carbon fitment plus copper core (taken from an old Broadwell system, heatsink with a couple of blah blah blah... yep. Go to sleep brain, stop this, maybe more tomorrow.
