I'm reading a New York Review of Books article about the Internet and the World Wide Web. The article discusses recent books by Tim Berners-Lee and Cory Doctorow. This paragraph caught my eye. Berners-Lee is the "he" at the start of the passage. Hurrah for Mastodon, I say. #Mastodon #Fediverse #Technology #Internet #SocialMedia #OpenSource

Lightcone is the rationalist org that runs LessWrong these days and runs totally not race science conferences for the rationalists.
Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX donated $6m to Lightcone. Then FTX in ch 11 wrote demanding a clawback (cos it was stolen customer funds).
Lightcone ... just ignored it! This went badly for Lightcone. They had to sell a conference space to raise the funds. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/jun/16/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-eugenics-scientific-racism
this is Oliver Habryka, CEO of Lightcone, on his thinking on this issue:
> "Oh man, we are being sued by FTX. I should hire a bankruptcy lawyer to prepare our defense." WRONG. I mean yes, of course go ahead and hire a bankruptcy lawyer to prepare the defense. But in-parallel use language models to prepare a defense yourself, then run the defense by the lawyer you hired until you think you understand reasonably well what the core constraints are. Then work together with the bankruptcy lawyer on the defense.
Habryka wrote this a few years *after* Lightcone completely fucked this one. Well done, Oliver.

@davidgerard I just started reading Adam Becker's new book More Everything Forever, in which David is briefly quoted. It's clear that tech billionaires KNOW they're right. Sam Altman is more deluded and morally corrupt than I had suspected (by page 7).
Amid concerns over the Biden administration's regulation of the crypto industry, billionaire tech investor Marc Andreessen, a longtime Democrat, donated more than $5 million to groups supporting Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
Since then, he's gotten what he called for: a hollowed-out Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

"The world's governments have all signed up to "anticircumvention" laws that criminalize reverse-engineering & modifying US #tech products. This was done at the insistence of the #US Trade Rep... using the threat of #tariffs
....
getting rid of anticircumvention laws only requires that governments control their own behavior – unlike taxing or fining companies, which only works if governments can control the behavior of companies"

According to early reports, another AWS outage has struck the internet, with a huge rise in reports of problems across AWS-backed services, including Azure, Microsoft 365, Minecraft, Capital One, Xbox, and, of course, AWS itself.

UK tech policy is shambles.
50%+ dependency on foreign cloud service providers, and instead of doing any work to reduce it Labour gov't does the opposite and placates American big tech for more investments into critical digital infrastructure...
now, after the wide outage a week ago, they want to just "draft a blueprint" in case situations like this repeat? this isn't serious.
we can't defend democracy on foreign servers.
