A wooden footbridge across a section of inner harbour, Aarhus, Denmark. Swirling clumps of white pancake ice cover the water below it. On the far side, warm light glows from the safe haven of Dokk1 Aarhus Main Library, a striking four-storey modern geometric waterfront building. The sky is cold grey with hints of sunset orange. The masts of two anchored ships can be seen off to the left. As ways to walk into your local library go, this one is reasonably storybooky, I think.

I cannot believe today is the first Monday of the year. I literally just checked the calendar to be sure. It feels as if it’s already been a long year and that every day of it has been a Monday. And yet here we are, still at the beginning. Oh well. Glædelig mandag. Here’s a postcard from #Aarhus, just to wish you a good week with at least a little bit of twinkle in it.

Short version: harbour sunrise. Fuller description: Sunrise, January 2nd, but last year. Aarhus harbour, Denmark. Sky pale blue. Sea pale and dark blue. A streak of orange on the horizon. Window lights and reflected sunlight on buildings. In the foreground, anchored by the community promenade, a picturesque old-timey red-and-white paddle boat. It is decked with warm white Christmas lights. Their reflections twinkle on the surface of the water. Everything is cold, quiet, peaceful.

It is Monday. Glædelig mandag. Everything has been a bit hectic. Here's a postcard from ⁨⁨ #Aarhus⁩⁩ to wish you an unhectic week.

Short version: Aarhus harbour, all grey. Fuller description: shortly after 12 noon yesterday, in dark rainy daylight, looking across the harbour, mid-city Aarhus, Denmark. The opposite of a postcard. Aarhus with no make-up on. The water is almost black. The sky is dark grey. Beyond, left of the port opening, a big triangular office block is grey-white. To the right, the warehouses and cranes on the industrial docks are dull grey. Framed between them in the distance, the normally distinctive modern skyline of the Aarhus Ø docklands neighbourhood is reduced to a low blob of grey in the rain. Only the bottoms of the buildings can be seen,. Denmark's tallest apartment block, the 44-storey Lighthouse, seems to have disappeared. It looks like the remnants of a ghost city. This looks like a black-and-white photo but is not.

I struggle with going new places sometimes, but I've been to my local #aarhus library enough times now that it's started feeling a little familiar and safe, and I'm really excited about that!

This morning, I picked up a book I reserved, smiled at strangers, looked at photos of the neighbourhood over the past many decades, impulsively borrowed two cds, admired a participatory trash art installation about music.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t my old friend Monday again. Glædelig mandag. Here’s a postcard from ⁨ #Aarhus⁩, just to say that I hope this week treats you kindly.

Short version: Aarhus harbour seen through coloured glass. Fuller description: Standing inside Olafur Eliasson’s installation ‘Your rainbow panorama’: a 150-metre long, 3-metre wide circular walkway in glass in all the colours of the spectrum. It's 50 metres above the city, a permanent art installation on top of Aros Kunstmuseum. (Aarhus International Art Museum). There are 360 degree views. The colours and light and mood change as you walk and according to the weather and time of day. It’s sunset, a few days ago. We are standing in the section with vivid primary shades of red and pink and purple and orange. The walkway ahead of us is empty, the roof curving in a deep purple-pink colour. Through the curving sweep of glass enclosing us, we see the city spread out for several kilometres below a sky dotted with streaks of dark cloud. Across the roofs of the city, we see the nearby harbour and bay. We see across a familiar buildings mid-city, see their windows and roofs. We can see the cathedral and its spire. The skyscraper Lighthouse apartment block in the docklands. Giant cranes. (Industrial lifting mechanisms, not big birds.) All of it is coloured in big rectangular sections of orange and purple tones.

A lovely annual tradition. The Smag På Aarhus ('Taste Aarhus') campaign that literally signposts wild edibles around the city and invites us to pluck away.

Short description: a pretty wooden signpost by bushes and trees. Fuller description: The river path and bike route, people walking in the distance. To the right, among the trees and bushes, an eye-catching, pretty, colourful old-style wooden board headed ‘Indtag Brabandstien'. 'Take The Brabrand Route'. Other signs hang on it, including one shaped like a shield with lots of text. It explains the 1241 law and gives info about the signposting of wild edibles all over the city. A litte sign is shaped like a jam pot with a label that says 'pickle me’. There is a pretty wooden red box like an old style letter box. It has printed brochures about what you can find, where. One of the signposts dotted around the city alerting you to wild edibles that you are welcome to pluck for personal use. It is a lovely yellow wooden bloom-shaped sign standing among a sea of greenery, apartment buildings rising behind. It sats 'eat me'.
