Hi #Linux team - any recommendations for a work desktop computer with the following requirements:
- can do basic research stuff (reading, writing) and also a little bit of basic data analysis (with python or Matlab)
- would run a distribution like #ZorinOS or Mint
- with a Max budget of ~£500 (tax / screen / accessories not included)?
- Ideally buying from this website: https://uk.insight.com/en_GB/shop/category/computing.html
It's for work so I don't think we can go through 2nd hand websites and such to buy this..

@albertcardona ahaa yeah every time I have to log in a new Windows computer at work I am reminded of all the annoying things I progressively had to tick off or uninstall on my own Windows. It's very frustrating. Also, why do they force us to log in to our personal account now, instead of just having a shared account??
Fortunately once you set it up properly it's mostly OK. At least that used to be true for Win10.. The only thing I can't seem to get rid of is the $#@!#% #Copilot which Keeps Coming Back.
That's why I'm giving another try to #Linux now - installed #ZorinOS yesterday and it looks good and feels faster (but I haven't got the WiFi to work.. yet)!

Wow! Just in time for Windows 10 going End of life, Zorin OS releases version 18! With features to make people coming from Windows feel like home, like a similar tiling system and integration with OneDrive, for those who want that.
I'm a big fan of #Zorin! Still, I feel like I should recommend new users go with Mint, because there's more help to find online if you need it… I'm a bit torn. But very happy to see Zorin still doing their great work! https://blog.zorin.com/2025/10/14/zorin-os-18-has-arrived/
It is very unfortunate, though, that Zorin OS 18 is based on the old Gnome 46, according to @omgubuntu.

Gnome 49 was recently released, so 46 is not good. I'm sure there's good reasons, not least of them that they most likely are a very small team with very little money.

Je vous recommande vivement de signer la pétition suivante : https://www.halteobsolescence.org/petitions/non-a-la-taxe-windows/ contre l'obsolescence de Windows 10. Dans quelques semaines votre machine Windows 10, probablement incompatible avec Windows 11 (qui est une bouse qui va ralentir l'ordinateur, si ça fonctionne) et donc il faudra raquer un abonnement pour avoir des mises à jour de Win10. Bref, c'est du vol en barre, signez cette pétition !
@nitot personnellement je voulais signer cette pétition, mais je ne le ferais pas car c'est continuer et pousser les utilisateurs dans la mauvaise voie. Aujourd'hui des distributions Linux sont matures pour le poste de travail. Il faut aider et pousser au remplacement des #windows10 par des #zorinos ou #debian #KDE #GNOME #lxde #xfce #mint et encore d'autres ! Tous mes ordinateurs fonctionnent avec Linux et tous ont plus de 8 ans et pour Surf, bureautique, messagerie, musique, retouche image, etc etc c'est suffisant. Il faut lâcher les #gafam et passer à autre chose.

vous pouvez suivre ce tuto pour installer Linux et être tranquille très longtemps.
Ou si vous voulez vraiment rester sur Windows et prendre le risque d’une mise à jour non officielle, cet article présente un outil très simple à utiliser
(aussi bien pour réinstaller de zéro que pour mettre à jour votre installation actuelle sans toucher à vos données.)
Dans tous les cas : pensez à faire des sauvegardes régulières de vos données.
