Corollary: providing the conceptual tools and empirical evidence about how online governance can evolve away from implicit feudalism and towards effective voice could have huge local and global sociopolitical benefits. Cyberspace has real sociopolitical power in the 2020s.

A group of researchers at France's CNRS public research body have developed an app to help users migrate from X to other platforms. The "HelloQuitX" campaign (a play on "Hello Kitty," since the letter Q sounds like K and X is pronounced "eeks" in French) allows users to transfer the lists of people they follow and their followers to Bluesky or Mastodon. The CNRS says it will delete personal information after migration. David Chavalarias, a mathematician at CNRS, says more than 5,000 people and organizations have signed up so far. BTW, note that while #HelloQuitX is raising money via donations, it looks like it's money that is going to be used for activism/information on a number of IT-related topics.

That too is great!

But users should be aware that it is not money going towards making Mastodon hosting sustainable.

Here in France the #HelloQuitX initiative https://www.helloquitx.com/ to leave #Twitter/X—and join Mastodon or Bluesky as better options—has gathered a lot of attention: politicians are talking about it in prime time on major medias.

That's great!

My only nit with the initiative is that it is not encouraging to donate to the chosen Mastodon server (for people choosing that over Bluesky).

A better social media world also needs users to understand there is no free lunch for hosting costs.
