And yes, I say "us", because back then I was doing it too. #MeaCulpa. But one of us has learned the lesson. As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ...

The mess made of TPM is just as much JT's fault, for forcing the eviction of two sitting MPs, and implicitly their entire branches. Instead of letting cooler heads negotiate a mutually agreeable new normal. As in any other leadership challenge in a political party, which let's remember, is a *totally normal* thing.

@strypey No MMP government has been tossed out after a single term... so far.

There were two single-term FPP governments, but the last was 50 years ago.

True. Misleading paraphase corrected, #MeaCulpa.

> There were two single-term FPP governments, but the last was 50 years ago

If I remember rightly, that one really only happened because the PM died during the first term, throwing the governing party into disarray and giving their opponents the inside track. I think you mentioned this in your blog piece railing against the 4 year term nonsense.

"No other party except New Zealand First has been prepared to say the neoliberal experiment has left our country in a worse position 33 years after the experiment started."

Comment by "Jon R", 2017

Well that's ahistorical bollox. The Alliance started saying it in 1991, while Winston was still a National MP. He served as Minister of Māori Affairs in the Ruthenasia government until 1992. By which time the Greens had left the Alliance and they've always said it.

Speaking of ahistorical bollox, I fact-checked myself and it wasn't until 1997 that the Greens agreed to leave the Alliance. So Winston First contested 2 elections before the Greens formally decoupled from the Alliance and ran their own candidate #MeaCulpa

But the Greens were founded in 1990 and they've consistently rejected Rogernomics as a failed experiment. So my point stands.

Well you know what? Me too. I gave Casey and Platformer a lot of grief when they published this, and in hindsight, they were right and I was wrong. #MeaCulpa.

I've now done pretty much what they did and moved to Ghost, although I'm being community-hosted onshore in Aotearoa rather than using Ghost's hosted service;

Another perennial favourite that seems appropriate, Hope by Fat Freddy's Drop;

"Hope for a generation,
Just beyond my reach,
Not beyond my sight."

https://fatfreddysdrop.bandcamp.com/track/hope-for-a-generation

(EDIT: swapped out link to version of Hope I prefer)

#RIP to the Freddies' legendary rhythm section, DJ Mu (Chris Faiumu). Released an anniversary edition of Hope would be a fitting tribute to Mu's legacy. I'd pay for it. Funds raised could go to his whānau or another worthy cause.

I just listened to the version of Fat Freddy's Drop's legendary jam Hope that I linked earlier in the day. It was the later one from Based on a True Story, with repetitive vocal sample, house-style version.

I was thinking this should have been called Hope 2, because no part of it is the same song. Then I noticed that the performance I prefer is called Hope for a Generation, not just Hope 😁 #MeaCulpa

Ok, cool. Clearly I haven't been keeping up with the ATmosphere Report : P #MeaCulpa

At this point the focus moves from whether the full ATProto stack can be independently hosted (it can) to;

* does BS Inc. retain control of any chokepoints in a way that, say, Mastodon.social doesn't?

* how effectively does ATProto distributes sociopolitical power? Which was the main focus of @cwebber's analysis IMHO.

@strypey you tried to move the conversation there, but not without sneaking in stuff like "it's like the cold/flu" and "people who are still concerned about covid are so irrational, they just want us to live in pandemic prison"

if you want to talk about covid solidarity to that without sprinkling in jabs at people who don't want the disease that gives you brain damage?

my idea of solidarity starts with clean air in school because kids shouldn't get sick all the time, nor should their parents

Hey, that was your story, not mine. I clarified what I meant, so this seems like an intentional strawman on your part.

Fair cop, I did get a bit hyperbolic there. You're right, that one was strawman on my part. #MeaCulpa

Hi @allpurposemat, it's been pointed out to me that ElementX is now being called a production-ready replacement for "Element Classic", no longer a prototype (despite being wildly incomplete);

https://element.io/blog/deep-dive-into-element-x/

A bunch of your comments make much more sense to me now. You were right. My apologies, both for the misinformation, and the terse exchange that ensued when you were confused by it. #MeaCulpa

@tofugolem
I think you misses my point. Try reading the whole post, and thinking about it, rather than just smashing out a snarky, out-of-context reply to the first sentence. Even a Trained #MOLE can do better than that.

Muted for a week.

EDIT: unmuted, please see subsequent post 🙏

Oh lordy, it struck me while I was having a shower (#ShowerThoughts) that I may have gone off half-cocked, in exactly the way I was accusing @tofugolem of doing *in that very post*. Oh the horrifying irony 😳

If this is indeed a case of heated agreement, my humblest apologies.

>But by default, AP disseminates posts to the public, ie to anyone.

Activities are only delivered to targets listed in to, bto, cc, bcc, and audience fields:

https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#delivery

If the audience is not specified (the fields are not present), activity is not delivered to anyone. The note in this section clarifies: "it's recommended that if no recipients are specified the object remains completely private and access controls restrict the access to object".

This means ActivityPub is private by default.

The situation is less clear with "posts", because they are not activities, but everyone agrees that access to posts should be regulated in the same way, using to, cc and other fields.

I stand corrected. This was the only bit of the thread where I knew I was stretching. But I wrote it to fill time during a long car trip which was ending as I wrote that bit. So rather than leave it dangling, I decided to take a punt on it.

Oh and #MeaCulpa;

Last year, based on my observations of Orange Stalin 1.0, I was arguing that Orange Stalin 2.0 would pull back from international military engagement as a cost-cutting measure, as protectionists, tend to do. I didn't anticipate that my nickname for him would turn out to be even more accurate than I thought.

Lest we forget, Stalin 1.0 helped start WW2 by invading Poland with Hitler. A historical fact suppressed after the Nazis attacked the USSR and they joined the Allies.

However none of my critics have yet produced references that show "capitalism" being used interchangeably with "free enterprise system" before the Powell Memo.

Which AFAIK was when that usage began, as a strategic move. Implicitly redefining anticapitalists - opponents of monopoliaed industries giving rise to neo-feudalism - as enemies of "free enterprise" and "free markets" (free now of regulation, not of economic rents, as defined by Adam Smith).

Ok, now someone has;

https://mastodon.online/@MartyFouts/114710266803391658

I stand corrected. But my questionable historical summaries aside, these comment threads demonstrates the point I was making in the OP; "capitalism" has neither a fixed nor commonly agreed meaning. It serves no useful purpose in discussion, unless it's defined before it's deployed.
