The Social Web Foundation (@swf) has kicked off a project to bring real end-to-end encryption to the Fediverse. It's a big undertaking, with real financial backing from the @sovtechfund

Check out this 2min walkthrough of #Emissary's upcoming data migration tool. It's the last big feature I'm delivering in 2025.

It uses the "LOLA" data portability spec to transfer account data from one server (like Bandwagon.fm) to a new one (like bandwagon.your-band-here.biz)

No CSV files required. Just authenticate and approve, and everything just moves.

There's tons more to do, but I'm confident this will be live by Christmas. 🤘🏻

What will this mean? We're working with extensions to ActivityPub to bring top-tier encryption into the Fediverse - the same industry standard that powers Android, Apple, Discord, and others.

We're aiming to release our first versions mid-year.

#Bonfire and #Emissary are great choices because each is a sort of "application builder" that can be molded to fit many different situations. It's going to be a massive undertaking, but I'm looking forward to the results

@swf with support from @sovtechfund is coordinating two interoperable implementations.

Bonfire is proud to be one of these first two projects, alongside #Emissary by @benpate

We think #E2EE should simply be the default for any private communications, and we’re especially thrilled to bring private, trusted collaboration to the fediverse.

@ Ben Pate 🤘🏻 Is this limited to moving to Bandwagon? Or from and to Bandwagon?

Or is the plan to ultimately support moving from anywhere in the Fediverse to anywhere in the Fediverse, including e.g. from ActivityPub-based Mastodon to Nomad-based but ActivityPub-enabled (streams) that works drastically different from Mastodon?

@lorenzosmusic You’ll soon be able to point-and-click and take your whole Bandwagon account to any server you want.

There’s nascent support goal is the prevent vendor lock in and keep server owners honest - even me.

There’s nascent support for this W3C standard, and I’m working to make #Emissary the first server to fully support online account portability.

Yes. Every new implementation will require some additional integrations in the core server. Atlas (for instance) required a ton of new geographic services.

But I DIDN'T have to rebuild the user ActivityPub integration, user authentication, image processing, ... you get the idea.

By necessity, all Fediverse apps have tons in common. Much than the surface issues that separates them. So #Emissary is that common core, with a programmable layer on top to support different needs.

Sure! There's tons to do -- and I'm happy to take guidance, suggestions, code commits from anyone who's interested. Atlas itself is very simple (just HTML + Javascript) because all the hard work is done by #Emissary

Since you're already familiar with Friendica AND Open Street Map, so you're probably already more of a subject matter expert than me.
