"What is genuinely new is the privatization of interpretation. ICE isn’t just collecting more data, it is outsourcing judgment to private contractors. Private analysts, aided by artificial intelligence, are likely to decide what online behavior signals danger and what doesn’t. That decision-making happens rapidly and across large numbers of people, for the most part beyond public oversight."
>>Administrators at White Memorial have told doctors not to call a detained patient’s family members, even to find out what type of medication they’re on or what conditions they have, doctors told LAist. Hospital leaders also have told doctors to allow immigration agents to remain by a detained patient’s side, even during consultations, inhibiting frank discussions between doctors and their patients and potentially violating patient privacy laws. Doctors say this is not typical protocol for any patients, including those brought in by local police or sheriff’s deputies.<<

Back in July, Sidney Reed was recording law enforcement in Washington, D.C., when she was arrested and charged with assaulting law enforcement, because an FBI agent got scratched during the arrest. But it didn't quite work out the way the authorities anticipated. Three times, prosecutors failed to secure an indictment on the federal assault charge, which carries a potential eight-year sentence. Then they switched to charging Reid with a misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty, went to trial, and was acquitted, with one of her public defenders telling the jury: “You should be livid that the government brought this case.” Here's more from Adam Klasfeld of @allrisenews.

U.S. immigration authorities are using smartphone facial recognition technology in the field to determine whether people are citizens, @404mediaco reports. Officers use an app called Mobile Fortify, which has a bank of 200M images and data from the State Department, CBP, FBI, and states as well as datasets relating to “individuals, vehicles, airplanes, vessels, addresses, phone numbers and firearms,” according to a memo viewed by 404's @josephcox. Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement: “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship — including a birth certificate — if the app says the person is an alien.

When the Times of London reported that former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio had misgivings about frontrunner Zohran Mamdani's policies, it seemed unlikely, since de Blasio had previously endorsed the Democratic candidate. It was unlikely — in fact, it wasn't true. In a remarkable snafu by The Times, journalist Bevan Hurley had emailed someone he believed to be de Blasio, but was in fact someone else, and then rushed to print the explosive story. De Blasio demanded a retraction (which he got), reiterated his support for Mamdani, and told @Semafor that he had never had an experience like this in 25 years of public life. As for the fake de Blasio? “You are correct. It was me. The real Bill DeBlasio,” the person who controls the email address responded to a message from Semafor, before ghosting the publication. Here's more on how it all unfolded.

One week to go until the New York City mayoral election and the media have spotted a "scandal." On Friday, Zohran Mamdani made a speech highlighting the Islamophobia Muslims faced in the city after the 9/11 attacks. The Democratic candidate mentioned an aunt who wore a hijab, who no longer felt safe taking the subway after September 11. The New York Post and Fox News quickly found Mamdani's aunt, who doesn't wear a head covering, and accused him of lying. Today, Mamdani explained to the media he was referring to his father's late cousin, who he called "aunt." Here's more from @thenewrepublic.
