A bunch of veterans ran off #ICE at Union Station, and then educated the #NationalGuard about their right and duty to refuse illegal orders. Now there is also no National Guard presence at the station. These #veterans say they will continue their sit ins across the city until all federal forces are out of #WashingtonDC.

The governors of another three Republican-led U.S. states have deployed National Guard troops to Washington in support of an extraordinary move by U.S. President Donald Trump to flood the city with soldiers. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/08/20/world/politics/governors-national-guard-washington-trump/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #nationalguard #washington #us #donaldtrump #republicans #california #gavinnewsom

Personnel from #WestVirginia arrived Monday, with troops from #SouthCarolina, #Mississippi & advance teams from #Ohio & #Tennessee expected to arrive Tuesday, a defense official said.….

[The #NationalGuard troops are]…operating under the command of Joint Task Force DC, which will decide where in the city to send troops in coordination w/agencies asking for assistance.

#Louisiana mobilized 135 personnel over the weekend & expect them to arrive in #Washington on Tuesday, said Lt. Col. Noel Collins, a spox for the Louisiana #NationalGuard.
Information about where the #troops would patrol & where they would be housed has been scant. A #Trump admin official said Monday that the Guard members “will protect federal assets, create a safe environment for #law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, & provide a visible presence to deter crime.”

The number of state #NationalGuard #troops detailed to Trump’s effort from the 6 states — #Louisiana, #Mississippi, #Tennessee, #WestVirginia, #SouthCarolina & #Ohio — amount to >1,100. Governors said they were responding to requests from the #Trump admin.

It is not clear why the admin requested additional support. About 800 troops have already been called up from the #WashingtonDC, Guard & have had a limited assigned role so far in Trump’s 10-day-old attempted takeover of #DC #law enforcement.

#Washington has been informed about the intent for the #NationalGuard to now be #armed, though it has not received details about when that could happen or where armed Guard members could be deployed in #DC….

It would be a departure from what the #Pentagon & #Army have said about the #troops being unarmed. The Army said last week that “weapons are available if needed but will remain in the armory.”

While it is not unusual for #NationalGuard units to be deployed for domestic emergencies within their states, including for civil disturbances, this “is really strange because essentially nothing is happening,” Cohn said.

“Crime is going down. We don’t have major protests or civil disturbances. There is no significant resistance from states” to federal immigration policies, she said. “There is very little evidence anything big is likely to happen soon.”…

“When you have this tool waiting at your fingertips, you’re going to want to use it,” [especially if you’re #Trump] Nunn said. “It actually makes it more likely that you’re going to see domestic deployments — because why else have a task force?”

The proposal represents a major departure in how the #NationalGuard traditionally has been used, said Lindsay P. Cohn, an associate professor of #NationalSecurity affairs at the US Naval War College.

The strategy is further complicated by the fact that #NationalGuard members from one state cannot operate in another state without permission, Nunn said. He also warned that any quick-reaction force established for #CivilUnrest missions risks lowering the threshold for deploying National Guard troops into US cities.

The other kind, #Title32, is a #federal - #state status where #troops are controlled by their state #governor but federally funded. It also allows more latitude to participate in law enforcement missions. #NationalGuard troops from other states arrived in DC under such circumstances during racial justice #protests in 2020.
