EU-funded Libyan patrol boat fires shots close to Louise Michel
Today, a patrol boat of the so-called Libyan Coast Guard closely approached the Louise Michel and fired shots into the water at just 200-300 metres away. Shortly after the incident, our crew found an empty rubber boat - the sad evidence of what we assume to be an illegal pull back to #Libya.
This continued aggressive behaviour by the Libyan organisation is not only known of, but seems to be encouraged by #Europe as part of its brutal border regime.
Italy and the #EU train, arm, and legitimise Libyan groups to enforce their illegal border violence. The specific vessel that shots were fired from today was gifted to Libya in 2023, with a ceremony that Italian Foreign Minister Tajani, Interior Minister #Piantedosi, and EU Commissioner #Várhelyi were present at.
Even as aggression against NGO ships has increased, those most violently targeted are people on the move, who face shootings, kidnapping, sexual assault, detention and other human rights violations on a daily basis.
Today’s shots were fired with the confidence of actors who know they are protected.
This violence needs to stop. Safe passage and human rights for all!

39 People safe onboard of the Louise Michel
At least 35 intercepted in sight of our crew
Early this morning our crew found a white fibreglass boat with 39 people in distress. Everyone was safely embarked onto the Louise Michel. Shortly after, the monitoring aircraft #Seabird, operated by @seawatchcrew , spotted another boat - a rubber boat with 35 people on board. Sadly, before the Louise Michel could reach the position, a patrol boat of the so-called Libyan Coastguard arrived, intercepted everyone and took them back to Libya.
#Libya remains a deadly trap for people on the move; facing detention, violence and slavery. Libya is not a safe place.
The Louise Michel is now underway towards a Port of safety in #Italy.

During our most recent time at sea, we were once again followed by heavily armed Libyan militia boats.
These militias are involved in trafficking, slavery, and the detention camp system.
None of this is new. It’s been documented for years.
Yet news has come out that the Italian army has trained Eastern Libyan forces on its own military bases.
The same forces that just deported 700 Sudanese people back to a war-torn country.
We’re tired of saying it: #Libya is not safe.
But the #Meloni government keeps backing both sides of Libya, hoping it will help her control migration.
The people endangering lives keep getting money, boats, and praise.
Meanwhile, @seawatchcrew, @dakini_sar, and @resqship were detained for doing the work #Italy and the #EU refuse to do.
We want freedom of movement for all, and an end to support for Libyan militias.
