"The centerpiece of the Thunderbird Pro offering is Thundermail, Thunderbird’s first official email hosting service. Built to support IMAP, SMTP, and JMAP protocols from day one, Thundermail will work seamlessly with the Thunderbird client and other standards-based email apps. Notably, the initial infrastructure will be based in Germany, a jurisdiction known for its robust data protection laws under the GDPR framework and a long-standing culture of digital privacy.

Locating Thundermail’s infrastructure in Germany positions the service as a privacy-focused alternative to US-based providers, many of which are subject to surveillance regimes like the CLOUD Act. Users will be able to bring their own custom domain or choose a Thunderbird-provided address with @thundermail.com or @tb.pro suffixes.

Thunderbird describes this move as part of its broader mission to reinforce support for open standards and provide users with a cohesive, privacy-conscious email experience, entirely within its own ecosystem."

"Ryan Sipes told the audience during his keynote ... that the Thunderbird mail client 'probably shouldn't still be alive'. Thunderbird, however, is not only alive—it is arguably in better shape than ever before. According to Sipes, the project's turnaround is a result of governance, storytelling, and learning to be comfortable asking users for money."

Sadly, somehow Debian has problems with the Wifi-Module on the #beelink. On the Pre-Installed Windows 11 it was able to get the maximum Wi-Fi speed that my router allows. With Debian I had to disable Bluetooth to get it faster than 0,5mb/s and even then it maxed at 20 mb/s.

Not sure what is going on there, but I now ordered a "known good" Wi-Fi stick. Don't want to go further into this mess than needed...it's still Linux. BUT the printer and scanner just worked 😅.

Hey #thunderbird users, how do I set the default calendar when creating new events? I don’t find an option for that and internet search sadly didn’t help either

As if I didn't already know it, #Microsoft customer support has proven to be useless. I requested an export of my #Outlook (.com, not the desktop app) email account over a week ago. The page said it'll take up to four days. I contact support and they tell me that exporting online isn't supported. Why offer it then‽

So I downloaded #Thunderbird, connected to my account and have synced my inbox. Currently exporting it using an add-on.

Next job after that is to import it to my new @Tutanota inbox, then cancel my Outlook subscription.

A voluntary "FOSS subscription"

...for open tools and services that are useful to me.

I'm doing this since summer 2024.

Each project gets paid at least 5€ per month.

Let's take the monthly recurring revenue model of MS365 as an example but fund projects, that won't sell your data 😊

I believe in monthly payments so the projects have a stable budget to operate with.

The list includes now:

- kde KDE (desktop on two devices, 10€)
- ✉️ Thunderbird
- 🛜 Signal

Joined today by:

- mastodon social.tchncs.de

So if you can, consider paying for the foss services you use 🙂

Thanks for hosting this platform @milan

Welp, the latest @thunderbird update has broken my ability to send work emails (and yes, it's definitely the update that's caused it not anything else - on my work inbox it's giving timeouts on all emails since the update, and I checked by updating it on another computer which triggered the exact same bug).

So I hope they fix that soon or I'll have to find another email client which would be a pain :(

Today I finally fixed a fragile piece of how I work which is how I refer back to emails relating to long-running tasks or just ones I might want to refer back to at some point.

Thanks to the Message-Id header in every email, #Thunderbird supporting a way to find and open messages by their ID (as well as a handy add-on for retrieving them), and some #Neovim magic, I can now link to emails in my work log files and get back to them incredibly quickly and easily.

Solving a 17 years old issue of #Thunderbird by exposing the default sorting and threading options in the settings, and allowing a quick "Apply to all" button (or choose folders separately).
Soon, on a daily release near you...
