This summer a US judge Google to allow third-party app stores & billing in the Google Play Store. Google asked for a temporary stay during the appeals process, but the Supreme Court said no. So expect changes starting Oct 22. https://www.theverge.com/news/793610/google-epic-android-supreme-court-stay-denied #Epic #Google #Antitrust #GooglePlayStore

Apparently that wasn’t enough.

In April, the #FCC sent a a blistering letter to #Disney CEO #BobIger saying it suspected the company was so thoroughly “infected” with “invidious” practices *favoring* *minorities* that it had no choice but to open an *investigation*.

Among other questions, the probe sought to determine whether Disney had really ended policies designed to ensure characters in its shows & its hiring practices favored “underrepresented groups.”

Meanwhile, a #Disney deal struck in January to buy a stake in the streaming service #FuboTV fell under scrutiny, too, with several reports that the #DOJ was investigating possible #antitrust violations.

The #FTC also launched a probe into whether Disney broke rules by gathering #personal #data from #children watching its videos without permission from parents. Disney settled the case earlier this month by paying $10M & agreeing to change its practices.

Stronger trade ties, more EU exports, jobs, and growth.

Today, Europe moves forward with two major agreements – with Mercosur 🇦🇷🇧🇷🇺🇾🇵🇾 and Mexico 🇲🇽.

For Europe, two strategic wins👇

Flags of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, Mercosur members, hang from one side of the bridge, while flags of the European Union and Mexico hang from the other. In the sky above the bridge are logos for Mercosur, the European Union, and Mexico. The bottom left of the image has the text: "CONNECTED MARKETS, CLEAR RULES. THE EUROPEAN WAY OF DOING BUSINESS." The bottom right corner shows the European Commission's logo.

Alphabet’s Google will have to share some search data with competitors but will not have to sell its popular Chrome web browser, a federal judge has ruled in a landmark antitrust case against the search engine operator. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/09/03/tech/google-chrome-antitrust/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #tech #google #chrome #internet #alphabet #antitrust

A judge in the US antitrust case against Google ruled that the company does not have to spin off its Chrome web browser or Android operating system. And it can pay to have Google services preinstalled on iPhones and other products, but cannot insist on exclusivity. Google will also have to share some search data with competitors. #Google#Antitrust#Chrome#Search#Androidhttps://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/02/google-antitrust-search-ruling.html

Almost 10 years ago, I wrote an article about consolidation in movies, and the vertical integration perils of movie studios owning the movie distribution channels.

4 years ago, I republished it, because the trend continued.

Now, the trend keeps going. Not great for the industry or the audience.

Any of those available in F-Droid? AFAIK other than Fennec, all the web browsers available there are wrappers around the Chrome WebView built into Android.

#TechHistory nerd side note:

One outcome of the 2001 antitrust case against BorgSoft was to stop them making all web browsing on Windows depend on Internet Exploiter. The Safari WebView on iThings does *exactly* what BorgSoft were forbidden from doing.

I'm guessing Goggle use various backhanded tricks to push app devs into using the Chrome WebView on Android. We're certainly at risk of future enshittification making it compulsory there too.

#AntiMonopoly prosecutors take note.
