I've been out of the loop for a couple of years on Linux phones. I'm poking around on blogs and Mastodon posts, but I figured I'd just ask:

Whats currently (as of January 2026) the most functional, stable, boring phone + OS combination?

I have a PinePhone from a few years ago and a couple Pixels to play around with.

(If you're comfortable with it and feeling generous, I would appreciate a boost for visibility)

@opensourceopenmind
Have not seen that before. What are the experiences running Android apps on it?

@kirschner @grote Depends what Android apps - FOSS apps from F-Droid or Obtainium should run without issue. There's a good review recently by @one_with_linux:

As I was working my upcoming #FOSDEM talk "The Linux Phone App Ecosystem" (https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/VH3GYN-linux-phone-app-ecosystem-2026/) I thought: Maybe I should ask my followers.. So here we are:

What do you want to know?
Which projects do I have to mention?
What should I focus on?
Which apps do you enjoy the most?
What are you missing?
What are you worried about?

Sad to see this happening: #Google will now publish #AOSP only in Q2 and Q4, instead of every quarter before. See the note on https://source.android.com (thanks to @grote for the ping) #FreeSoftware #OpenSource

Screenshot with policy change: "Effective in 2026, to align with our trunk stable development model and ensure platform stability for the ecosystem, we will publish source code to AOSP in Q2 and Q4. For building and contributing to AOSP, we recommend utilizing android-latest-release instead of aosp-main. The android-latest-release manifest branch will always reference the most recent release pushed to AOSP. For more information, see Changes to AOSP."
