Dear @Mer__edith and the the amazing @signalapp team,
After the last update, the Signal "desktop app" is requiring us to launch the mobile app - however, many of us do not have the Android or any other "mobile" version of the Signal app any more.
We are a large (by our standards) group of #Linux phone users, and your "desktop" app is our "mobile" app : )
Our previous phones on which #SignalApp was initially activated was an Android or Apple device and we have since then completely migrated to #Linuxphones. Some of us may have registered Signal on #signalcli, Flare, #Molly, Signal Android in #WayDroid, etc.
The #mobileLinux community is growing - we have members spanning a good number of projects and devices, e.g.
- @purism #Librem5 and #LibertyPhone running #Debian-based #PureOS #GnuLinux, #Alpine-based #PostmarketOS or #Mobian,
- @PINE64 #Pinephone and PP Pro running #ManjaroARM, #SailfishOS, etc.
- @furilabs #FLX1 running #Droidian-based #FuriOS,
- a wide variety of Android phones (including OnePlus 6, Google Pixel 3, #Fairphone 4 & 5) running #Alpine-based @postmarketOS ,
- @volla , #Fxtec and #Brax3 devices running #UbuntuTouch by @ubports,
- devices running @mobian which is part of #Debian project, etc.
[Apologies to any project I may have failed to include - you are all appreciated]

@fubaroque whoa, never seen that before. Thanks for reporting!
@leaverou @fubaroque The same in #SailfishOS browser.
If you work on a Mobile GNU OS, like @postmarketOS or @mobian, I strongly encourage you to make it as easy as humanly possible for app developers to make one app version for Mobile GNU OS. Which works on any variant, rather than having to play whack-a-mole with distro-specific bugs.
Bonus points for coming together to create a dev environment that can spit out versions for many different mobile OS. As many as possible.

🚨 Google is killing Android freedom.
Starting 2027, unverified apps can’t be side-loaded.
➡️ F-Droid harder to install
➡️ Custom APKs blocked
➡️ Google decides what runs on YOUR phone
Google’s Android is becoming Apple: Your device, their rules.
It’s time to switch to open alternatives: Graphene, Calyx, Lineage. ✊

- I personally daily drive #SailfishOS for more than a decade (commercially supported versions of SFOS even have "Android App Support" running inside a container for "that one app" with no native linux port you can't get without)
- I've heard positive things about #postmarketOS and #UbuntuTouch (but don't have personal experience)

Google increasingly locks down its once-open mobile OS, and today took a major step in that bad direction.
If Google is going to be as control-freakish as Apple, AND continue to run a spyware-based mobile ecosystem, why not just buy an Iphone?
They need support, users and funding. It'll come at the cost of some convenience (very little for GrapheneOS) but it'll grow these platforms and give them more leverage.
I just cannot wrap my head around how people think iOS and Google's Android are the only two viable daily drivers for mobile usage.
Given the absolute insane rage over Google's Android decision (already 1806 points in HN), there is an opening for an alternative phone platform.
Maybe @jolla's Sailfish OS could get wind on their sails from this? https://sailfishos.org/
Help shape the next Jolla Phone!
We’ve got access to a modern 5G smartphone platform, and we want to hear your take on what the next-gen Jolla Phone should be.
What screen size makes sense? How much memory is enough? What are your must-have features?
No strings attached, just cast your vote and help us explore the potential:
Please spread the word so we get as many persons as possible to vote and share their views, and that we can make this happen! We intend to keep this initial questionnaire open for a couple of weeks.

This ties in with a lot of @bert_hubert's recent articles about Europe needing to become more independent from the US wrt technology.
Also @Mer__edith after the talk I mentioned #SailfishOS to you. Which is, IMHO, the only viable alternative to iOS and Android at the moment.
I've been using it as a daily driver since 2013. It's made by ex-Nokia employees after Microsoft destroyed it.
