Meet Tapinaspis atroannulus, which I photographed in Cartago Province, Costa Rica. Tortoise beetles number about 3,000 species, and they’re easily some of the most beautiful insects on Earth...iridescent, jewel-like, full of microscopic mirrors. This one has its shell pressed flat in its tortoise pose, but when they start moving, they look like miniature cartoon turtles wandering the leaves. #macrophotography
