Another cool effect, especially for long bunches of flowers like this, is that they seems to fade in an out of reality in an interesting foggy way

One of the cool things I've mentioned on here before about living in Korea is people's dedication to jam a garden anywhere it'll fit. These ripening peppers come from a garden built on a half-meter strip of land between two construction fences next to a vacant lot

One of the things I found fun about shooting this way was what happens to flowers up close. You can clearly see the tops of the stamen, but then it blurs further back, only to clear up again as the petals come forward

"Slice of Life"

Today I set myself a weird photography challenge: I have a 10mm macro ring that a attached to my f1.4 ~50mm equiv lens. I kept most of my shots right at that fastest aperture and tried to capture a really narrow depth of field up close.

Here are some grapes I tested with before I went out in the field near my home in Korea. They're... juicy 👀

A rare & very welcome visitor to our garden this afternoon: a common darter dragonfly (Sympetrum striolatum; Große Heidelibelle in 🇩🇪) 🐉🪰

From the colouration, this appears to be what is termed an “over-mature” female: they're a lighter yellow-green earlier in the season.

They were very common in our NL garden, but here, far above the river, not so much so ☹️

A close-up picture of a dragon fly seen from behind perched on a dead branch. The eyes are brick red, with yellow and black markings behind the,. The thorax is greenish-brown, with bright red patches at the base of the four wings. The abdomen has some pruinose blue patches near the top and then a series of segments in green-brown, red, yellow, and black. The wings are clear, with brown stigmata near the tips, and there are hints of the yellow stripes on the legs which separate this dragonfly from the closey-related ruddy darter.

Australian Geographic nature photographer of the year 2025 winners – in pictures
Overall winner: Fractal Forest

A painterly, macro view of a cauliflower soft coral by Ross Gudgeon has taken out top prize in the Australian Geographic nature photographer of the year competition. ‘This is an exceptional photograph that skews perception and leaves us questioning reality,” the judges said.

Inside-out view of a cauliflower soft coral. Named for its characteristic appearance that resembles a cauliflower, with numerous small, rounded, bump-like polyps that give it a puffy texture. Photograph: Ross Gudgeon

‘Giving us a unique perspective on coral. There’s nothing fake here, but still we ponder, is this nature or a painting?’ An exhibition is on now at the South Australian Museum

Little guards III/III, August 2025.

#silentsunday #macro #macrophotography #bloomscrolling #flowers #pink #gardening #spider #photography

Macro photograph of an open flower of tickseed (Coreopsis), with a yellow and black centre and pink blue petals. A greenish crabspider is standing on the petals on the right side, its head up and looking at the camera with two eyes. It is probably hunting or waiting for a prey with legs stretched but looking as if it is putting its arms around the centre of the flower, defending and guarding its flower. The background is green.

One of my favourite weird mushrooms for #FungiFriday ! Plectania melastoma, or the black hole fungus. Grows on wood, though often it appears to be on the ground from buried wood.

Two small gritty-textured round cup fungi extend from the side of a twig. The cups are open at the top and have a dark interior.
