Only one month until we all in Britain celebrate six years since we Brexited. Can't believe things have been so good since we broke our chains and threw off the oppressive yoke of our evil European overlords. Smooth sailin'! I actually love being poor and watching society collapse. It's brilliant and exactly what we all voted for. No more doctors! No more teachers! No more healthcare! I actually hate being able to afford food and am glad to be living through an unprecedented mental health crisis that the government who was supposed to save us has now decried as laziness. Hooray! Hooray for everything! I'd do another Brexit if I could. Is there any way we could make things even *more* shit? Perhaps allocate the remaining community resources to pay racists to spend all day kicking us in the genitals in between painting roundabouts. Let's do a double Brexit. Just keep on Brexitin' until no buildings are left standing and everything is on fire. 🏴🫡

In a world where the only reliably expanding markets belong to the military sector, and technological innovation appears increasingly devoted to perfecting the art of mutual destruction, where can one still find hope? https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/12/28/world/year-that-could-be/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #uk #albania #brexit #italy #donaldtrump #eu #immigration
I love the idea there's a debate about whether we/UK should rejoin the EU Customs Union; its the same old entitled nonsense.
Sure we can express an interest or even desire to rejoin, but expressing that in the face of the EU's pretty obvious position that it treats the UK with suspicion & would only welcome the UK back with very serious conditions, is just political stupidity.
If we want to rejoin step one is building back trust & goodwill, something we've not really been doing!
hmmm.... the UK is expected to announce tomorrow that it has rejoined the Erasmus student exchange scheme.
the Q. will be how much the UK will be contributing to the scheme to have closed the deal - anyone thinking that the UK has beaten the EU down much from their original request has not been following the various negotiations with the EU since Brexit.
But no doubt Keir Starmer will trumpet this as part of reset that Britain has 'won'!

Funny how many donors to Farage and people close to him get money from Russia, then pass it on to him. I mean it’s almost like he’s a traitor and a Russian asset, but that can’t be true of the great patriot, can it?…..

British press complains about Poles leaving the UK for #Poland, calling this “exodus” and
The great Polish exodus: The arrival of 100,000s of Poles changed the face of Britain, but now they’re returning home in droves for a better life in their low-tax, booming homeland. Could there be a more damning indictment of our decline?
The press who published it is… The Daily Mail, who literally engineered #Brexit 😂

@mcc @socprof We’re dealing largely with people who are so invested in the imagined outcomes of their bold actions that they label any warnings of unintended side effects as sedition.
Economic interactions are very complex and people who predict outcomes are usually wrong. But the Fed has largely done a good job this century (modulo dot com crash, 2008, and COVID).
Calling the Fed ninnies and declaring that tariffs + firings + ending entitlements will fix everything is monumentally stupid.
Same as the Hard #Brexit people talking about "Project Fear", when people were just talking about the future consequences we are now seeing today.... :|

@elduvelle not sure if this is UK specific but usually customs tax or customs duty is levied on anything that's imported into a country. I think the customs officers don't really know/care if the imported item is a gift or not, and these taxes can sometimes even be higher than cost of items being imported (depending on which country they are being imported from and the price of the item). Happened with my partner once when he had backed a kickstarter - that's how we learnt how high these taxes can be!
@manisha yeah, apparently in the UK both are treated slightly differently (see these rules, but for some reason the threshold for gifts is lower (taxed if their value is £35+ while "goods" worth £135+ are taxed). It's been a few times now that I get presents from friends and family from abroad (including nearby France, thank you #Brexit) and am asked to pay in order to be able to receive the package, this just feels like extortion
