Have been living in Switzerland for over 17 years, but for some reason almost always I have been abroad on August 1st, the national holiday remembering the founding of Switzerland in 1291. Was riding my trainingsride on the "Panzerpiste" (military shooting range tanks etc), which is open to the public in the weekends and national holidays.

So I was just minding my own business until I heard shooting and the first thought was "oops, I made the wrong decision, I misread". Only after a few seconds I saw a couple of boys laughing. It only dawned at that point it was only fireworks to celebrate August 1st. 😅 I never realised they shoot so early...

Schöner Nationalfeiertag! 🇨🇭

A glacier side moraine with an almost imperceptible path on its ridge is leading into a sea of ice, rocks and snow in the not so far distance. The massive glacier is just a few dozen meters below from where the picture was taken. It flows & drops down from the peaks in the back (all ~4000m and around 1300m higher up for my position), forming a maze of large seracs on the way. Sunny day with blue sky and some wispy clouds.

ETH Zurich and EPFL will release a large language model (LLM) developed on public infrastructure. Trained on the “Alps” supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), the new LLM marks a milestone in open-source AI and multilingual excellence.

"The model will be fully open: source code and weights will be publicly available, and the training data will be transparent and reproducible, supporting adoption across science, government, education, and the private sector. This approach is designed to foster both innovation and accountability.

A distinctive feature of the model is its capability in over 1000 languages. “We have emphasised making the models massively multilingual from the start,” says Antoine Bosselut.

Training of the base model was done on a large text dataset in over 1500 languages — approximately 60% English and 40% non-English languages — as well as code and mathematics data. Given the representation of content from all languages and cultures, the resulting model maintains the highest global applicability."

Rückblick | Review 29/07/2022

Zuerst hatte ich zu Hause um 1 Uhr morgens ein paar Aufnahmen der Milchstrasse gemacht aber bemerkt, dass ich weiter Richtung Interlaken das Zentrum über dem Niesen haben könnte. So habe ich mich auf das Fahrrad geschwungen und zwischen Gunten und Merligen hatte ich das Bild, das mir vorschwebte - gegen 2 Uhr morgens.

Buried in Proton's AI announcement today is a pretty shocking detail about their service 👀

Because of legal uncertainty around Swiss government proposals to introduce mass surveillance — proposals that have been outlawed in the EU — Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland. Lumo will be the first product to move.
