Japanese researchers have found that people who experience COVID-19 “brain fog” have a higher-than-usual density of a certain neural receptor, a discovery that could pave the way for treatment options. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/10/24/japan/science-health/covid-brain-fog-study/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #sciencehealth #covid19 #brain #health
GenAI and what it does to the brain.
Truly excellent "long read" article about genAI and what it does to those who come to rely on it. Well researched, with insightful quotes from thoughtful people.
Good science/tech journalism used to be like that, but on AI topics this has become rare. So much easier for the salaried writer of a mainstream paper just to follow the hype.
The author, Sophie McBain, is listed as a "freelance writer" for Guardian, Times and New Statesman. I am glad she's kept her free mind.

University of New Mexico #scientist is revealing what might be one of the most overlooked causes of #dementia — damage in the #brain tiny #bloodvessels. Dr. Elaine Bearer has created a new way to classify these changes, showing that many people diagnosed with #Alzheimers also suffer from #vascular damage that quietly destroys #brain tissue. Even more surprising, she’s finding #microplastics inside the brain that appear linked to #inflammation & #memory loss. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/10/251005085637.htm #healthcare

Researchers linked Long COVID "brain fog" to a systemic increase of AMPA receptors in the brain using PET imaging. Higher receptor density correlated directly with more severe cognitive symptoms and inflammation. This discovery provides a potential biomarker for diagnosis and a new therapeutic target, suggesting drugs that suppress AMPA receptor activity could be an effective treatment.

today in Bologna was the last day of shooting by director Michal Lam of a documentary, shot with a 360° camera explicitly for planetariums...and I apparently was the main character.
I think I nailed it - a role for which I trained all my life.
"Can you look in the right screen? Can you click some button? Type something on the keyboard?"
And I just did, so natural, not even using stuntmen. 😅

Last year a filming team visited me in #Bologna to shoot a few scenes for a documentary about the #Universe and the #Brain to be shown over 360° on the dome of the planetarium in #montreal
Now it's out!

With a catchy trailer, in which yours truly appears at 30s:

The documentary is directed by M. Lam, and it features a few other researchers, artists, and neuroscientists (A. Seth and my friend A. Feletti).

Does human episodic memory 🧠 depend on context-invariant or conjunctive coding of single neurons in the human hippocampus?
A recent TiCS (https://www.cell.com/trends/cognitive-sciences/fulltext/S1364-6613(25)00031-2) paper stimulated a very interesting debate about the nature of hippocampal coding in human episodic memory that i found very insightful.
The discussion centers around context-invariant coding of concept neurons (CN) vs. conjunctive coding of episode-specific neurons (ESN) in the hippocampus, both following different lines of thinking about the HCs involvement in episodic memory.

😵💫Ever Felt Dizzy Standing Up? Let’s Talk Orthostatic Tolerance!
🚨Orthostatic tolerance = the body’s ability to handle posture changes without dizziness or fatigue. Vital for older adults. Essential for independence.

📣Coach Tip: Laughter is the most underreported and accessible way to enhance your quality of life.😅
✅ #Fun fact: #Laughter rewires the brain, boosts your immune system, and deepens human connection. You don’t need a #gym membership, fancy supplements, or a five-step morning routine—just a reason to laugh.
And hey, there’s no shame in being the person who laughs a little too loudly. That might be exactly what someone else needs today.🤣
