I Just Want to Go Back Home | MyNotes

A single thought that deafened the noise of a new city and a new life. This is the story of a paralyzing fear, of porticoes that felt like cages, and the silent nod that changed everything. It's about finding your way back home, even when you're far away from it.

When I was cleaning yesterday I realized one of my oldest knitting projects ever is still with me - keeping Paddington’s neck warm. #knitting #fiberarts #memories

If you’ve been following this account’s pics the last few days, I do have a lot of stuffies. There are many, many more than have been pictured.

Center, Paddington Bear standing up in rubber rain boots and a blue felt coat. There is a note that reads “Please look after this bear. Thank you” hanging off his left shoulder (viewer’s right). He has a floppy red hat on his head. Around his neck is a woolen scarf in seed stitch in colors of blue and tan.

Viewer’s left, small artwork of a turtle with large eyes and a stretched blue smile.

Viewer’s right, bottom corner of a poster reproduction of Dali’s Hallucinogenic Toreador

My Mother sure had green thumbs. This photo of the garden was taken before my parents shifted to a retirement village. It was a corner block with no fences, and no back yard, so the beauty of that huge garden could be seen on two street frontages.

Everyone loved her gardens. She was always working out there, all day every day, and people would often stop to chat. She got to know so many people in the neighbourhood.

On the day of her funeral, on the way home from the cemetery, my brothers and I decided to stop at their old house and have a look at the garden which the new owners had maintained.

Lots of other people had the same idea, and we all sort of came together for one last look at that magnificent garden.

My home desktop - 1 March 2000 - a Pentium 233 MMX.
The OS was Debian Linux - you can see a printed Tux near the keyboard.
No broadband connection, just a 56k modem.
Iomega Zip drive - so I could download stuff at Uni and bring it back home.
One year later, this became my first 24/7 server.

A late 1990s - early 2000s computer setup on a white desk, featuring a large beige Sony CRT monitor, a beige tower PC with front-facing floppy disk and CD-ROM drives, an external 56k modem, a beige keyboard, and various scattered items such as CDs, cables, and glasses. Behind the monitor is a large black Sony speaker, and a motorcycle poster hangs on the wall. The photo’s timestamp reads “1.3.2000.”

Three years ago my neighbor-dads and I did a midsummer ski trip to Slettinden, a mountain we looked at every day from our rekkehus in Tromsø.

After a lot of hiking and navigating some complex steep terrain we felt we had done enough with just 100m to the top. And it was midnight, and we all had families to wake up to in just a few hours...

We did have a huge amount of fun and some wild skiing, picking tiny lines way further down than we thought we would get..🏔️❄️♥️

Heading home, a beautiful sunny very early (1 or 2am, not sure) morning walk.

Slettinden! A snow covered peak. We climbed the ridge to the left to a cliff band just out of frame that we could not downclimb with packs and skis on, so we had to retreat, doenclimb off the ridge out of frame and ski up the snow just below the rocks in a rising traverse.

When I return to a place I haven’t seen in years and find it exactly the same, I get the strange feeling I’ve traveled through time. Emotions from a different moment in my life come rushing back, and memories surface.

Tonight, my wife and I went back to the pizzeria we used to frequent when we were dating. It brought us back so vividly that, as we left, I instinctively drove toward my old home. It was surreal - yet incredibly beautiful.

Fun Fact: At the end of 2008 / beginning of 2009, I bought a mini laptop — an Acer Aspire One, on sale because no one wanted them. Windows didn’t run on it for even a minute, but every other OS did. Including a version of "Hackintosh", which actually led me to get a MacBook Pro a few months later (which my parents are still using). It ran quite well.

But the OS that worked best and longest on that little guy was PC-BSD. I truly did everything with it. When I was flying around Europe during the most hectic years of my life, it was my trusty companion - always ready, always in my backpack. I have a special memory tied to it that will always make it dear to me, but it’s a private one 😃

Oh, I almost forgot the Fun Fact: its hostname was always "acerone" - from Acer (Aspire) One, of course. But in Italian, "acerone" sounds like "big Acer", and considering its micro size (9 inches), it was truly ironic.

I still remember the first time I saw this at a friend's house. I had the normal C64 and his father had this "portable" version.
And I started dreaming of a computer that could always be with me. Maybe in my pocket.
Late 80ies...

In the background, a woman lounges by the pool. The headline reads “Who’s keeping up with Commodore?” with a description promoting the Executive 64 as a personal, portable computer with powerful capabilities. A smaller image of the computer is shown below, and a man in a suit gives a thumbs-up next to the Commodore logo and the slogan “Keeping up with you.”
