Here is what is missing in the popular #OSM based #FOSS apps (#OsmAnd, @CoMaps & @organicmaps) from being a potential replacement for GMaps.

1. Photos & Reviews are two most important things that are missing right now. @mangroveReviews and @lib_reviews are here to fill the reviews gap. #WikimediaCommons, @panoramax are here to fill the photos gap.

2. Crowdsourced Real time Traffic data. I couldn't find any #opendata platform yet. Though I saw an empty repo created under the CoMaps project. 🤞

@bortzmeyer @jpmens - I guess pDNS databases are too restricted to access. I see the advantage of an open database for such information.

My best guess for now would be openintel.nl, which has a massive #opendata program.

If you want to play with the data: I uploaded a CSV with the basic data that should be clean and correct at https://codeberg.org/jwildeboer/SchengenData/src/branch/main/CSV/2025-08-04_SchengenExceptionsClean.csv

I will update the CSV when the Commission makes new data available, time permitting. Enjoy!

#EU#Schengen#OpenData

@EUCommission OK. My work has started. As you only give me a PDF, I am doing the manual work of converting it to a workable format, starting with a spreadsheet that can als be exported as CSV at https://www.icloud.com/numbers/0cbAcYt76Xr10LTauwV_9hCyA#Schengen As you can see, a lot of chaotic data that needs to be cleaned up, which I hope I can finish over the weekend. The first 50 entries are done. Only 423 to go :)

And now we can start looking for patterns 😊 For starters: Which countries filed the most Schengen exceptions and how many per year? Austria and Germany are on top. Norway, Finland, France, Denmark next.

It would be easier to defend @linuxfoundation from new criticism over one unsurprising finding, out of 12 findings, in their report on their 2024 World Open Innovation Conference session Pathways to Open Data, if it were not the 3rd thing ever posted from that report and if some of the report & other posts were not boosting corporate "AI".

But for the record #DataProtection is essential and #OpenData is a public good, they are not incompatible, but bogus privacy concerns do hinder data sharing.
