If you’re on Linux, there’s a good chance you use GNOME: it’s the default experience across Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora Workstation, Endless OS, and more. If you’re on another desktop, you still likely use components developed by GNOME contributors—or maybe you get apps from Flathub.

Giving GNOME a chance on my new Framework 13 laptop. Last time I tried it was around 7 years ago, and it's much better than I remember.

But some ridiculous things keep popping up — like the fact that I still can’t adjust the touchpad scroll speed. What the heck? libinput has supported this for ages. How is this still not a thing?

@stroughtonsmith @viticci About time, really, that Apple UI design caught up with the web circa 2010. The whole fixed viewports thing always astonished me. Every time Apple released new hardware, there would be *another* bespoke target for so many apps.

The new system is much better, especially on external displays. But having used it exclusively over a Mac for a week, I really hope it over the next month gains some stability and much-needed UI and UX fixes. It’s still in some areas very v0.1.

@craiggrannell @stroughtonsmith @viticci I suppose it's easy when they can borrow from #GNOME

Embloggeration happened: https://www.bassi.io/articles/2025/08/03/governance-in-gnome/

For those who were unable to attend, or see the recording, these are the notes for my GUADEC 2025 presentation about introducing a formal technical governance in GNOME, starting from a "change proposal" process, through the addition of a steering committee to evaluate those changes, and all the way down to the removal of the role of the "maintainer" for projects that exist under the GNOME umbrella.

The presentation "Terminal-mode GNOME" by @n8 can be seen here:

Very useful for someone who runs a simple window manager with lots of terminal stuff, but needs to integrate with apps from time to time.

I think that the "open" or "xdg-open" command can be a replacement for many programs offering menu launchers for apps.
