#SilentSunday

#photography #snow #winter #wintervibes #garden

Photo of a snow-covered community garden. In the distance at the center of the image are two teal plastic lawn chairs with curved backs and armrests, their upper surfaces coated in inches of snow. The chairs are surrounded and visually framed by the garden’s plants and trees, all with dark leafless branches outlined and emphasized by their snowy coverings. At the garden’s far end is the dark brick facade of a building. The scene has a magical, enclosed snow-globe feel, like the setting for the beginning of a fairy tale.

Our Lime and Lemon #Xmas Trees all decorated and set up at our front door!

Indoor tree in next toot in thread.

(Featuring Mr. 1 photobombing, dropping a bauble through the cat flap) #SecretSantaAoNZ

I don’t know if anyone else who wants one has not bought an #Xmas tree yet, but if you want to copy or take inspiration from what we do:

Every third year my family buys a living fruit tree to decorate which goes in the garden afterwards, and one of the thirds we buy a living #AoNZ #native #tree, and the final third we buy a pine tree (just for nostalgia once in a while).

This year is the fruit tree year and we’ll get a lemon tree, which we don’t have yet in our garden.

With the prices of dead pine trees, why not spend the same money on a living plant which will take up carbon rather than release it as it rots after Xmas? And also it’ll continue to give you joy after the #holiday season.

It gives more variety and we get to keep a whole lot of trees for our #garden!
#gardening #christmas #NewZealand #aotearoa

Edit to update: We ended up getting three fruit trees since they were cheap: A Lemon, a Lime and a Plumcot.

Will post pics once they’re decorated, follow to make sure you see them, if you wish to :)

After a week of mostly cold (for SE TX), wet, cloudy weather, the sun came out yesterday and with that I was surprised again to see some late season #butterflies, mostly #monarchs and long-tailed skippers, swarming the main blooming plant remaining in the front #garden, the mistflower. Made for this one brief encounter. Sharing is caring.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14.
Painted at the end of 2024 in Clip Studio, using my own photo from Portugal as reference. It is the palace at Monserrat, near Sintra. I struggled quite a bit with it at the time, but I still like how it came out, overall.

A digital painting of a palace garden, where Intricate stone arches, pillars and walls form a veranda. It looks onto lush trees and flowers of a wide variety, with more hazy wooded hills beyond. The sun strikes dramatically between the pillars towards us, casting most of the architecture in blue shadows, while the garden is lit up in a variety of warm greens under a clear blue sky.

I used some of my own sieved compost to cover the coriander seeds.
Clearly it did not reach seed-sterilizing temperature when I made it, so most of these seedlings are NOT coriander :D
On the plus side, I think most of these are edible in some form. The tall ones might be tomatillos?

Monochrome IR nightvision scene. A snow covered garden underneath an apple tree. A badger is digging in the snow, excavating an apple and trying to eat it, which is difficult as the apple appears to be frozen. It rolls the apple around with its forepaws and eventually gets a good bite into it and devours it.

Hey just a friendly reminder since folk are doing flu and covid vax rn to not forget about TDaP! Many places recommend a fresh boost if you have a tetanus exposure and its been at least five years since your last one, and it should be boosted every 10 years regardless. While people associate tetanus with rusty nails and barb wire fencing, it lives in the soil. So if you play in the dirt (looking at cavers, gardeners, outdoorsy folk in general) you may be due sooner than you think. Folk like us often have abrasions or cuts on our hands from doing things, and then shove our hands into dirt and mud. Keep that in mind! Plus it seems like every other winter there is a new whooping cough outbreak and thats the P part of TDaP so its an easy one to forget about but a good one to stay up on.

Now that you are protected, go flip some rocks! (And make sure you gently put them back!)

A pretty reddish orange salamander on some muddy dirt earth. It kinda blends in some, but it shinier looking and more color saturated.
