I'm having some quite odd issues trying to get apps ( #jellyfin #immich #nextcloud) to work with mounted NFS shares though (they can 'see' the files and folders but can't actually access them.
Once that's fixed I'll have another go at getting gmediarender and spotifyd working properly too!

I was active on stage and behind the curtains for several shows throughout high school and college. My social anxiety has mostly put an end to that chapter of my life, though.

does anyone have recommendations for software i can self host that will serve a local video library with a somewhat youtube-like UI? i tried jellyfin but it doesn't let videos have descriptions, and i couldn't get mediacms to install under podman

This week I am trying to move my #video library from #Plex running on #TrueNAS to #Jellyfin running on TrueNAS.
First impression is that Swiftfin (the AppleTV app) is not good enough. I have 500-600 films in a hierarchy of dozens of directories. Both Jellyfin and Swiftfin dump all that into a pile called #Movies. So my screen has all 500+ films in alphabetical order.
Things like Monsterdon schlocky films are right next to comedies and drama and action.
I want to see my top level folders like Comedy, Action, Kung-Fu, etc. Then I want to descend into them. I can kinda get this in the web UI, but the TV UI is determined by the app.
Other than that, I’m really enjoying it. I love the collections and the automatic figuring-stuff-out. It’s been good.
I love the lack of shoving stuff in my face. Plex of course wants to shove things into my face.
I’m downloading Infuse for #AppleTV to see if it works better.

One more thing that really defies my expectations. This is a media LIBRARY. A library is a thing where one organises information to make it findable. So while it is fine to have “recently added” or “recently watched”, and it’s fine to make them prominent, it is not fine to hide the library and the organisation.
These apps offer a zillion ways to organise: recently added, next up, unwatched, related. They don’t show you your library structure. I find it hard to believe there are many people out there like me who have hundreds of films, but DONT organise them. Surely they can’t be the majority. Surely people are not dumping every film into one giant folder and hoping the apps will sort it out.
I know what I want better than they do. Show the fucking hierarchy that I built.

A funny side-effect is that #Jellyfin has these automatic “collections”. It can figure out through file names or metadata that 2 films are parts of the same thing. That leads to some funny ones thanks to Monsterdon. I have 4 different Godzilla collections based on the studios. I have a “Blacula” collection because we watched both of them for Monsterdon. 😛
