There are eggplants, and then there are autumn eggplants — a sweeter, juicier variety that's great for tossing into a stir-fry. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/09/30/food-drink/autumn-eggplant-aki-nasu/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #fooddrink #recipes #japanesecuisine #vegetables #meat

Here is the monthly photo looking up the allotment. Today's visit was the first for a month due to health reasons so it will have to do for August and September. The runner beans have finished cropping, the potatoes have been lifted and the wallflower plants in the foreground are nearly ready to be moved back home. We have started picking the apples (out of shot) with a view to making cider next month.

#Allotment #allotments #beans #vegetables #gardening #garden #apples #cider

As with previous months, the main thing you can see is the runner beans. These make a huge contribution to the compost heap....when I get round to cutting them down!

Because I was still on the mailing list for some reason, let me remind you to NOT BUY from #BakerCreekSeeds because of their blatant support of right wing ideologies and white supremacy.

Better options: High Mowing Seeds, Sow True Seed, Heritage Seed Market, Alliance of Native Seedkeepers, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Fedco Seed.

The allotment is looking good considering how hot and dry it has been; broad beans (Bartek) and the tall-growing peas (Alderman) are taking off nicely. (See alt text). The ridged ground is where the second early potatoes are planted but they are not through yet. They are Wilja, Nadine and Acoustic.
The onions and garlic are also on schedule (out of shot).
Heartfelt thanks to my wife, who is doing all the hard work this year due to my poor health.

A view up one side of our allotment. The broad bean plants are in the foreground and the Alderman peas on the right. They grow to 1.8 metres, hence the support structure and netting.
